Nathan Peterman gets another gig, this time with the Chicago Bears

Nathan Peterman keeps staying employed.

The backup quarterback best known for a notorious stint as a spot starter with the Buffalo Bills has signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears. The Bears announced the transaction on Wednesday.

Peterman, 28, has spent the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, a favorite of now-exiled head coach Jon Gruden, who sung his praises when he joined the Raiders in 2019 despite his "nightmare performances."

The Bears apparently see the same upside the Gruden did. Though Wednesday's announcement didn't come with praise attached from anyone from the Bears' coaching staff or front office.

Peterman's NFL history

Peterman made eight appearances with the Bills including four starts during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, tallying a 32.5 quarterback rating. He completed 52.6% of his passes while throwing three touchdowns and 12 interceptions and taking eight sacks, numbers that suggest he might not be up for this NFL quarterback thing.

His first career start with the Bills in 2017 is the stuff of NFL legend. Peterman threw five interceptions on 14 attempts in the first half of a 54-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Head coach Sean McDermott, who'd benched Tyrod Taylor that week in favor of Peterman, replaced Peterman with Taylor in the second half.

Peterman hasn't thrown an NFL pass since a brief appearance in 2020 for the Raiders, where he spelled Derek Carr at the end of a 43-6 Week 11 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 25 yards and took two sacks.

After spending the start of spring as a free agent, Peterman's back in the NFL where he'll presumably act as the Bears' No. 3 quarterback behind Justin Fields and Trevor Siemian. Terms of his deal were not initially reported.
