How much is Auburn paying football coach Hugh Freeze? Here are the details

AUBURN, Ala. — Hugh Freeze's deal to become Auburn football's next coach is a six-year contract with an annual base compensation of $6.5 million per year, according to an Auburn athletics official.

There are incentives in Freeze's deal that could increase his pay to just under $10 million, though it is unlikely he would hit some of those lofty incentives. He also has a 75% buyout.

The contract has not been released by AU.

Auburn officially announced the hire of Freeze on Monday night, ending a monthlong search led by athletics director John Cohen. It's the first hire Cohen has made since coming to the Plains from Mississippi State on Oct. 31, the same day former coach Bryan Harsin was fired.

Harsin's deal with Auburn, which was agreed to in 2020, was reported to be worth $31.5 million over six years. His contract came with a 70% buyout, which amounted to the university being on the hook for $15.575 million when the former Boise State coach was relieved of his duties.
