MS Coast playoff outlook and scenarios as high school football regular season winds down

Playoff tickets have been punched in every region, but district titles, home field advantage and the last available postseason seats remain up for grabs.

The lower classifications (1A-4A) are down to one week left in the regular season and the upper classifications have two.

Here is a breakdown of each Coast region’s playoff outlook and look ahead at some of the biggest games yet to be played, as well as standings and mathematical playoff odds.

Region 4-7A

Gulfport and Ocean Springs clinched their playoff spots this past week and now have their sights set on each other with the region title on the line. Friday’s clash between the Admirals and Greyhounds will decide the top seed out of the district.

The loser will have the consolation prize of a home-field playoff spot as the No. 2 seed. The final seeds will be a race between D’Iberville, Harrison Central, Biloxi and St. Martin.

Biloxi will play at Harrison Central this week, while D’Iberville hosts St. Martin. The two games will shape the back half of the region’s playoff allotment.

Region 4-6A

Picayune and George County will face each other this Friday one week after securing each other’s playoff spot. A Picayune win would clinch its fourth straight district championship while a George County win would clinch home field for the Rebels.

The other two spots can be wrapped up this week with a Pascagoula win over over West Harrison and a Hancock win against Long Beach. The Hurricanes and Bearcats can cause a bit of mayhem with upsets, however.

Region 4-5A

Gautier needs only one win to claim its first district championship since 2008 and the first opportunity to snag it is Friday at Stone.

An upset by the Tomcats would secure their playoff spot, but some help from Vancleave would do the trick, as well. The Bulldogs have some incentive to help out Stone as a win over East Central would also seal a postseason trip.

The last spot is dicey and is likely to go to either Laurel or Wayne County.
