Most Premiership fans happy in cup, but woe for County & Well
We asked for your views on the weekend Scottish Cup ties. Here are some of the responses.
'Celtic huffed and puffed against Kilmarnock'
Holders Celtic overcame Premiership rivals Kilmarnock 2-1 on Saturday evening...
Joe: We keep creating clear chances, but our strikers have lost their form. I think it's time to possibly give Johnny Kenny a chance. We played brilliantly and should have had the game won by half time - and it's not for the first time this season.
Neil: Got the job done, just! We should have been out of sight by half-time. Performances been very inconsistent. I am mindful of the number of games we are playing. Poor finishing is costing us. Adam Idah is a big concern. Is the jersey too big for him? We need a quality finisher. New striker please Brendan Rodgers.
Martyn: Overall, we played well, missed some chances and should have put them out of sight. We dominated possession again and created loads of chances that should have been put away. Hope this continues into the European games.
Duncan: Unlike the big bad wolf, Celtic huffed and puffed and struggled to blow Killie's house down.
Ray: Very wasteful, but we dominated and played a lot of good football. Reo Hatate is the 33.3% guy, only truly performing once in every three games. Champions League game on Wednesday should bring the team together with a must-win performance.
Bear: I thought, once again, Celtic dominated the game. However, when you don't take your chances, you leave yourselves susceptible to being drawn into a slugfest, which I thought we dealt well with. Side point, was Derek McInnes watching the same game? His tactics were naive and his post-match comments were laughable.
Kilmarnock supporters were buoyed by the performance...
Frank: Solid performance by Killie. Unfortunate to lose two important members of the team through injury. Speedy recovery for both of them. A special mention for Robby McCrorie - what a brave effort he made getting injured in the process.
Stewart: Injury to McCrorie was deliberate and the officials should have taken appropriate action. If it had happened at the other end, it would have a different outcome. The foul before Celtic's goal should have been to Killie, but again officials chickened out due to the venue. When are officials going to give fair decisions when playing the Glasgow clubs?
Anna: A battling performance. Celtic were always going to be tough to beat, but we didn't back down. Okay, injuries didn't help us, but there's plenty of positives to be taken from that and, if we can apply them to our league form, a top-six place is within reach. If we can strengthen the squad, even better.
Doug: I thought Killie played well. There were so many individual performances that were good. Pleased for Bobby Wales getting the goal. Another strong showing from Fraser Murray. Lewis Mayo, Joe Wright and Robbie Deas were excellent. We just need to keep that level up in the league now.
'Professional performance but nothing more'
Cyriel Dessers' hat-trick helped last season's finalists, Rangers, progress to round five with a 5-0 win over Fraserburgh...
Tom: Hamza Igamane congratulating Cyriel Dessers on his hat-trick at the end of the game and the smiles both of them certainly gives me the impression that there is a bond in the team that you might not have expected given recent away results, so give the manager credit for that and let's see how the rest of the season goes.
Ronnie: We beat Fraserburgh. There's nothing to shout too loudly about. Findlay Curtis looks like he has a future with Rangers. Other than that, not a lot to say.
Stephen: Professional performance. Glad Dessers finally got a hat-trick and I thought the young lads did well when they came on!
Allan: I thought we played well. Delighted for Cyriel that he got his hat-trick, but he still misses too many. Clearly, it's opposition we should beat comfortably and we did. We can't take much from beating Fraserburgh, but I hope this run of home games has got us on a winning streak that we can maintain.
Lennie: What a find Clinton Nsiala is - wow! Disappointed that Cole McKinnon and Curtis never played 90 minutes. They showed more class than any of the other fringe players that were on the park, especially Ross McCausland - he seems to have lost his way. Surprised he was not taken off instead of Zak Lovelace. Let's hope we turn up at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Alexander: A professional performance but nothing more. It was good to see the younger guys get an opportunity. There are still 'established' players not reaching the required standards of Rangers. We accept 5-0 any time regardless of opposition and we move on. Well done to Fraserburgh.
Elaine: Great to see some of the youngsters getting some game time and doing well. Huge respect to Fraserburgh, who came and didn't play 11 men behind the ball for the whole game. Well done to their fans too - the biggest away support at Ibrox this season.
Peter: Pleased with the result. In fairness to Fraserburgh, they came to enjoy the day. They made it a bit hard for us in the first half. I know they're not the hardest team, but Dessers comes out the biggest winner with a hat-trick and man of the match - it's not often you hear that. I'm glad Clement gave a lot of young ones a run out. Nsiala looks a good prospect. Roll on Thursday, a big test for us.
'Let's hope this is the start of a winning streak'
Aberdeen returned to winning ways, defeating hosts Elgin City 3-0...
Malky: Can't really gauge anything from this game - a clean sheet, plenty of chances and could and should have been more. We are a competent striker away from getting back at it with regards to the league. Slobodan Rubezic should be moved on, though, he's a constant liability. Anyway, on to the next round and get the season back on track, hopefully!
Fred: A close first half. Great to get a win and to move into the next round. Still crying out for a striker who can add zest to our attack. Elgin gave us a good game. Let's hope this is the start of a winning streak.
Eilidh: A slow start, which is natural considering the run of form, but once Shayden Morris scored, we looked much better and like the Aberdeen of the start of the season, albeit against a League 2 side. If not for the Elgin goalkeeper, it could've been five or six. Great to see Pape Gueye back and glimpses of the Duk of old. Hopefully the result needed to push on now.
Allan: Banana skin avoided. A solid back four with Alexander Jensen looking a steal of a signing. Welcome back big Pape and we ended the match with four strikers going for goal - and only bad luck and a good goalkeeper kept the score down. Duk will kick on from here as he knows he's in the shop window. Sivert Nilsen is a top player and a good anchor but needs a rest.
Chris: We made it tough for ourselves, credit to Elgin. Morris gave us a good lead, Duk had a tough first half and Peter Ambrose looked lost. The substitutes made a real difference. Gaye looked good but rusty, 10 men Elgin helped, but also we almost conceded too. Duk's second half was much better. Job done, but a long way to go, especially up front.
Chris: Jimmy Thelin knows what he's doing, perhaps not the league. However, if he won't go to his youth, he needs goals from somewhere. He has the fans and management, but he needs to find goals. His signings look the part, so find goals, bump Jack MacKenzie and Jamie McGrath, work with those who want a future, not those whose head is not in the game. We are behind you.
Hearts, Hibs & St Mirren through but County out
Top-flight sides Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian and St Mirren all beat lower league opposition, but Ross County came a cropper against Championship visitors Livingston.
Hearts fan responses to the win away to Brechin City...
Derek: Dodgy pitch was a real leveller, but it was a good performance in the end. Yan Dhanda looked like a man with a point to prove and got a deserved goal - and Elton Kabangu looks a good shout for the rest of the season. Jorge Grant was unlucky, James Wilson was class, but Cammy Devlin and James Penrice outshone everyone. Not a finished article, but signs that we're improving.
Jim: Brilliant opener from Brechin and equaliser from Dhanda. Fitness told in the end and Hearts ran out comfortable winners. However, even this game still showed that Hearts lack a creative midfielder who can run with the ball and that they are severely weak up front. For me, Kenneth Vargas can get on the first plane back to Costa Rica - he's useless!
Alan: A real Jekyll and Hyde performance. The first half an hour, we were absolutely awful, the second half we played some good stuff, good attacking play, especially down the left side. This team shows they can turn it on when they want to. Big Elton knows the game and knows the way to goal. His physicality will cause teams a lot of problems.
Jimbo: At last, something seems to be slowly happening with the team. They're not leaking goals. This team now needs time to play together and, with more possible additions, belief and confidence from the players will come. The league is tight, but I'm hopeful we can climb the table into the top six. Silly points dropped previously could hurt us though.
Steve: First half was a blood and guts cup tie - narrow heavy pitch didn't help. Craig Halkett and Kabangu were standouts. Good to see Wilson coming on as substitute, as at this point he's not a 90-minute player. Big question marks about our midfield, that's where we need new faces. Just relieved we got through this round.
John: Not the best performance, but job done on a poor pitch against a physical side. Excellent goal from Dhanda, showing hunger. Hopefully the floodgates will open for Kabangu. Vargas trying to claim that goal is embarrassing. He's an imposter and needs moved on.
Thoughts of Hibs supporters after easing aside sixth-tier visitors Clydebank...
Danny: Hibs were decidedly average. The Bankies were obviously aiming to defend and didn't have a shot on target.
Kenny: A professional performance. We looked like a very good Premiership side. The team are working hard in all departments and the effort everyone's putting in is great to see. Our season starts here. Hopefully, we can go on a good cup run, but qualifying for Europe must be the priority. We can't afford now to take the foot off the gas.
John: The early goal got rid of any banana skin fears. Good to see Rudi Molotnikov get a start. He contributed to all good things on the park. The defence was solid as usual, Dylan Levitt's performance was excellent and Martin Boyle is unplayable at the moment.
The St Mirren faithful were also pleased with their win away to Queen of the South...
Eddie: Job done. Winning in cup games is all that matters. It looks like a new star has emerged - young Callum Penman was impressive. Let's not forget he is only 17 and it is about managing his development. Now we just have to beat Aberdeen in our next game - let's get new signings in and get points on the board.
Dougie: In the end, a comfortable win, but we were put under pressure when Queen of the South scored. Good performances from Marcus Fraser, Scott Tanser, Penman and Toyosi Olusanya. Mikael Mandron was the weak link again. Play young Evan Mooney - at least he is a goalscorer and shows great potential.
But it was a disappoint day for County...
Jamie: Livi deserved their win. Too many players just miles off it. How Don Cowie can't see this squad needs a bit of pace and width to mix things up is beyond me.
Rick: Didn't deserve to win. Only started playing when we went behind for each goal. As for the final goal, the entire defence and goalkeeper were just ball watching and, finally, what on earth was Akil Wright doing for that handball? I couldn't believe my eyes!
John: That's the worst performance I've seen by County. They allowed Livingston to bully them and failed to attempt to control the game. Connor Randall not starting was a mistake for me. Apart from his tap in, Jordan White had very little, if any, influence.
'Saints improving one game at a time'
St Johnstone, who are bottom of the Premiership, may not have been favourites against fellow top-flight side Motherwell but progressed with a 1-0 win...
Dunc: One swallow doth not a summer make, but it is a start. This has to be maintained against the same opposition next week. We still need a couple more in before the window closes and I would not be sad to see the back of Benjamin Kimpioka, Adama Sidibeh and Nicky Clark. We need another striker to compliment Makenzie Kirk.
Duncan: It's fair to say that the team will have been unburdened by league issues, but there was also a freshness about the team, a better balance and some reward for the work they've put into the last few games. It'll be interesting to see how they go against the same opposition next week, hopefully with one or two more additions.
Jimmy: A good win, can't pick out any negatives. The defence is still an issue, but much better, a clean sheet. We're looking like more of an attacking threat. Just needed that comfort of another goal. Things are improving, one game at a time.
Paul: Fantastic first half where we should have been two or three up. Looked far more solid at the back and a commanding performance from Andy Fisher. It's not over. If we can play like that in the league, we will win games.
It was a difficult away day for Well fans...
David: Thousands of fans travelled in hope of continuing our cup dreams, but what unfolded was a nightmare. Stuart Kettlewell says we didn't start the game well - we haven't played a first half for most of the season. Surely that reflects on the manager - if he can't motivate the team for a cup game, when can he?
Stuart: The worry is this score was predictable. The team aren't up for the fight. I only remember their goalkeeper making one routine save. Tawanda Maswanhise was the one bright spark. The rest of the team need to look at him and follow.
Ross: Miles off it like we have been for a number of weeks now. Injuries, yes, but we have to be making a better account of ourselves in a knockout tie. Teams are now aware that, when they score first, we'll have little to no reply. We look disjointed and without a clear plan of how to break teams down. Going to be a long second half of the season I fear.
Stuart O: Two very poor teams who will end up bottom two teams in the league. Motherwell have no structure, get overrun in midfield week in, week out and create nothing going forward. Lack of effort, flair and no entertainment value. Poorest Motherwell team in a long time.
James: An absolute disgrace and embarrassment. Played off the park by a bottom-of-the-league team. Both players and management have to look at themselves. Same story every week, terrible to watch, no control, no first touch, high aimless balls, and no threat. God knows how we're still fifth in the table.
Billy: Time for change. Every week the manager has an excuse. So much dead wood in the squad. We are on the slide and going to be in a relegation battle. All those coaches in the dugout - what do they actually contribute to the team, because there's nothing to show for it on the park.
