These Are The Most Popular Pet Names In Britain

New research has found the most popular names for our pets - and where we take inspiration from to name them.

Alfie is the most popular dog name in the country, while it also proves popular with cat owners, sitting fourth in the list.

The most popular cat name is Charlie, while Bella and Poppy are second and third most popular for both cats and dogs.

Rosie is the most-picked name for horses, while Alfie proves popular once again, sitting in second place.

The research from pet insurers Animal Friends analysed the names of almost 60,000 of their policy holders to coincide with National Pet month.

One of the top ten names for cats, Milo, also appeared in a list of most popular names for babies earlier this week.

Other names in the lists take inspiration from various movie franchises and TV shows, including Marvel, Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

Avengers and Thor villain Loki had 112 entries, while Simba from The Lion King is more than twice as popular as Frozen character Elsa for pets.

Some 805 animals were named after foods - including Cookie, Fudge, Rolo, Oreo and Biscuit - and another 567 were named after musical heroes like Marley, Ozzy and Elvis.

The data showed that cat owners were more likely to find inspiration from their favourite foods, whereas more dogs were named after their owner’s favourite musicians.

The most popular food based names were whereas the most common musically influenced names were with tributes to the late David Bowie and Motorhead’s Lemmy making up the fourth and sixth positions respectively.

Westley Pearson, Director of Claims and Marketing for Animal Friends Pet Insurance said: “Pop-culture trends come and go, but clearly our affection for our animals is a constant.”
