Moretto: Milan’s Pioli replacement plan was ‘not carried out’ while Terzic can be ‘ruled out’
The derby between Inter and AC Milan tomorrow night risks being decisive for the immediate future of Paulo Fonseca as head coach, Matteo Moretto has confirmed.
Milan have had a far from ideal start to the 2024-25 season under their new manager having won just one of five games, with nine goals conceded and the most recent blow being a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League where the damage could have been a lot worse.
Virtually every major source is reporting that Fonseca is under real pressure to deliver a positive result and performance in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday night otherwise there is a high chance that he will be sacked after just six games.
Moretto gave an update on the situation linked to Fonseca’s future during a column for the Daily Briefing and he confirmed that there needs to be signs of progress tomorrow.
“The results, and the way the results have arrived, has not satisfied the hierarchy at AC Milan. The game against Inter will be an important game for him, as Fonseca must respond on the pitch and with results,” he said.
“After the Milan derby, the board will evaluate Fonseca’s position, in a very thorough and concrete manner. What I can say is that Milan had a plan for how to replace Stefano Pioli, which was not carried out in the end. So they had to take a different path and find a different solution.

“Milan are working on potential alternatives, but without real purpose yet, as they want the focus to be on the derby, and they do not want to destabilise the situation more than it is now. But it is true that, like any team that may need a quick solution, they are working out their options.
“We’ll see who that is. Lots of names are coming out, there are some that various rumours are coming out about, but not all of them are correct. For example one that I would rule out is Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager.
“He simply went to see their match against Liverpool in the Champions League. Right now, I have no indication that he is on their agenda.”
