Chelsea want to sign a left winger, that much is clear, Kieran Gill has reported for the Daily Mail.

Despite already bought a wide player or two in almost every window stretching back a couple of years, the Blues aren’t happy with their current options, especially with Mykhailo Mudryk facing a significant suspension after failing a doping test.

“Inside, they have been looking to bring in a left winger, with Mykhailo Mudryk still suspended, and a striker to compete with Nicolas Jackson,” Gill writes. He also pointed out that the club “have the capital to spend if the right opportunity presents itself.”

Listed among their potential targets are the same names we’ve seen come up time and again – Jamie Gittens, Nico Williams, Alejandro Garnacho.

Academy talent only one step from first team action

But there’s also a mention in there for a player already at the club. Tyrique George has been picking up Conference League minutes through the season, and no player has benefitted more from Mudryk’s absence than the academy graduate:

“If Chelsea do not land a left winger, 18-year-old academy kid Tyrique George has shown enough promise that he should be granted more opportunities in the Premier League,” Gill writes.

That has already begun with a few impressive cameo appearances, and we expect them to continue increasing in duration and frequency.

Enzo Maresca likes to praise the youngster when given a chance, like after his impressive FA Cup showing against Morecambe, where the manager said that “Tyrique is doing well with us… hopefully we can give him more chances and he can become an important part of this team.”

Another academy player coming through and proving himself – who would have thought it? Jadon Sancho has not set the world on fire, let’s face it. It wouldn’t take much for George to push past him and become a starter once he gains more experience.
