Montreal Canadiens left winger Emil Heineman was involved in a traffic accident as a pedestrian on Monday, the team announced.

Heineman, 23, is expected to be out for three to four weeks with an upper-body injury stemming from the accident, the team added.

The Canadiens practised in Salt Lake City on Monday ahead of Tuesday's game against the Utah Hockey Club at 9 p.m. ET.

Heineman has 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points in 41 games. He leads the team in hits, with 101, despite averaging 11:09 of ice time. He also played his first four career NHL games last season.

The Florida Panthers selected Heineman 43rd overall in the 2020 NHL draft. They traded him with a second-round pick to the Calgary Flames in April 2021 for Sam Bennett and a sixth-round draft pick. In February 2022, the Flames then moved Heineman to the Canadiens with Tyler Pitlick, a first-round pick and a fifth-round pick for Tyler Toffoli.

Heineman has spent most of this season on a line with Jake Evans and Joel Armia, according to moneypuck.com. Michael Pezzetta is expected to play with Evans and Armia instead.
