Monday Night Football: Kirk Cousins, Vikings hand 49ers second straight loss

Christian McCaffrey still showed out for San Francisco, but it wasn’t enough on Monday night.

The Minnesota Vikings held on late to stun the 49ers and grab the 22-17 win at U.S. Bank Stadium in their “Monday Night Football” matchup in Minneapolis. The loss marked the 49ers’ second straight after they had opened the season 5-0.

McCaffrey scored his first touchdown of the night just before halftime on a 3-yard run, which extended his scoring streak to 16 straight games. He now trails only Lenny Moore, who set the NFL record after scoring in 17 straight games.

McCaffrey’s touchdown came with just more than a minute left in the half, and it cut the Vikings’ lead to just three points. But it was Jordan Addison who somehow ripped away what should have been an interception and turned it into a 60-yard score before halftime. After a missed extra point, that gave the Vikings a 16-7 lead at the break.

That was Addison’s second touchdown of the night, following a 20-yard touchdown reception to open the game in the first quarter.

The Vikings got down to the 1-yard line midway through the third quarter and tried to tush-push their way into the end zone, but the 49ers mounted a goal line stand and held them to just a field goal. Then, just more than a minute later, McCaffrey ran in a 35-yard touchdown for his second of the night — which cut the lead back to just five points.

Though the 49ers had a chance to go down and take the lead again after the two teams traded field goals, Brock Purdy threw a bad interception to Camryn Bynum. Purdy threw a second interception to Bynum with less than 30 seconds left in the game, too, after the Vikings missed a field goal. That gave them the five-point win.

Purdy went 21-of-30 for 272 yards with a touchdown and his two interceptions. McCaffrey had 45 rushing yards on 15 carries, and another 51 receiving yards on three catches. George Kittle had 78 yards on five catches.

Cousins went 35-of-45 for 378 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the win. Addison had 124 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. T.J. Hockenson had 86 yards on 11 catches, too.
