Monday’s basketball rewind: No. 13 Chambers powers past Cox Mill at Mike Gminski Classic

The backboard kept shaking, but that didn’t stop the Julius L. Chambers boys’ basketball players from getting the ball in the basket.

Tarris Bouie, one of the two super juniors who lead the Cougars, threw down a thunderous dunk during their 100-69 victory over Cox Mill in the final game of the Mike Gminski Classic on Monday night.

It wasn’t the only slam throughout a dominant win for Chambers, which is now ranked No. 13 in the Charlotte Observer’s latest Sweet 16 poll. The Cougars (6-5) took an early lead and didn’t look back in their win over the host Chargers, who dropped to 5-5 after previously winning two in a row.

“(Bouie) did what was expected,” Chambers head coach Brian Frasier said. “He got on a fast break, he’s athletic and he’s able to do that at a high level. So he did is exactly what everybody came here to watch, and what I would expect of him: To be athletic and play at this level.”

Officials took nearly a minute to readjust the rim following Bouie’s emphatic dunk late in the first half.

And once the backboard on the far side of the Cox Mill gymnasium appeared to be sturdy again — fellow super junior Markus Kerr gave it his best shot as well.

Kerr was Chambers’ leading scorer on Monday night, totaling 28 points and seven rebounds. Bouie finished with 23 points and five boards.

“They’re kind of like twins in a sense, but with different games,” Frasier said. “They’re both athletic. They both have the ability to score at a very, very high level, and they complement each other well when they play at their best.

“(Monday) was just an exciting, overwhelming feeling to be able to see my guys perform the way I expect them to be. This team has the opportunity to be special.”
