MLK upset! Chambers knocks off NCISAA champ Christ School, ends its 25-game win streak
If there was any doubt that Chambers High School is a serious contender for an NCHSAA 4A state championship, the Cougars probably ended that line of thinking Saturday night.
Don’t let the Cougars’ 11-6 record fool you.
Playing at home against nationally ranked Christ School, the reigning NCISAA 4A state champions, Chambers rode a strong defensive performance and 24 points from junior Markur Kerr for a 73-66 win at the MLK Hoopsville Classic.
Christ School (16-1) — ranked No. 11 nationally by MaxPreps — suffered its first loss since Jan. 20, 2023, and had its 25-game win streak snapped.
Chambers, playing one of the toughest schedules in North Carolina, has now won six of its last seven games. The only loss in that run was to reigning N.C. 4A public school state champion North Meck, 76-73, on Jan. 9.
“I wanted to play uptempo,” Chambers coach Brian Frasier said. “The whole team came together and got a great win.”
Frasier’s team came out with the focus and pace he wanted, jumping out to early leads of 12-4 and 20-10. Chambers led 38-22 at halftime.
But N.C. Mr. Basketball finalist and N.C. State recruit Zymicah Wilkins of Christ School began to fight back, and so did his team.
With Wilkins (25 points) dominating inside and guard Tyler Jones also getting hot, Christ School cut the lead to 55-43 at the end of the third quarter.
Christ School closed to within six, at 67-61, in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars (11-7) let the Greenies get no closer and polished off the win.
And Kerr, a top 100 national recruit in the junior class, said there wasn’t really a secret about how his team played.
He said the reason was rather simple:
It was “the practice before the game,” Kerr said. “We had a great shootaround.”
