Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie has teased the possibility of further sequels in the action franchise.

The seventh film in the series is the first of a two-parter, which are rumoured to be Tom Cruise’s final appearances in the role of Ethan Hunt.

Despite the rumours of a conclusion, McQuarrie revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the flexibility of production could potentially lead to a ninth entry in the franchise.

“Look, we're still shooting [Dead Reckoning Part Two] and there's any number of ways that that story could play out,” he said. “When you're watching Mission: Impossible, and watching the team go through these adventures, you're having some sense of what it's like to make a Mission: Impossible movie.

“There's always a plan, the plan always changes, everything goes completely awry, and hopefully everything always turns out alright in the end,” he added. “But you never really fully understand, or trust where it is you're going, until you get there.”

Dead Reckoning Part One will follow Hunt and his IMF team as they track a deadly weapon before it falls into the wrong hands, with Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames and Vanessa Kirby all reprising their roles from previous entries.

The new cast for the film includes Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Esai Morales, who will play the film’s villain, Gabriel: “He's something of an enigma. You discover more about him over the course of the two movies. There's definitely more to him than meets the eye and he's something of a ghost of the past,” said McQuarrie of the character.

The director also teased the role of former MCU star Hayley Atwell, who will play the mysterious Grace: “[She] represents a stranger in a strange land - she's somebody who does not come from this world, she's not a spy, she's not an agent. If anything, she's an agent of chaos, and is something of a random element that's thrown into this story.”

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is released in UK cinemas on July 11 and in US cinemas on July 12.
