Mikko Rantanen Blockbuster Trade Paves The Way For Rangers To Acquire J.T. Miller
The Carolina Hurricanes traded for Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall late on Friday night, which changes a lot when it comes to the J.T. Miller sweepstakes.
Big deal looks something like this:
Carolina: Mikko Rantanen, Taylor Hall
Colorado: Martin Necas, Jack Drury
Chicago: third-round pick, 50 per cent of Rantanen salary
The big question becomes: can the Hurricanes convince Rantanen to sign? Sebastian Aho will lead the lobbying— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) January 25, 2025
Originally, the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes were the two frontrunners to acquire Miller from the Vancouver Canucks.
The addition of Rantanen essentially takes Carolina out of the running for Miller and paves the way for the Rangers to make a trade.
It has already been reported that the Rangers and Canucks engaged in trade discussions and were even close to striking a deal at one point in time.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers and Hurricanes got permission to speak with Miller.
The Hurricanes made their big move and now Rangers general manager Chris Drury may feel the pressure to respond to their division rival and attempt to even the playing field by acquiring Miller.
Other teams including the New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars have been linked to have interest in Miller as well, but there’s no doubt the Rangers are in the driver's seat.
