Mike McCarthy could have interest in Bears head coach job

The rumor mill keeps on churning when it comes to potential head coaching candidates for the Chicago Bears. Ever since the Bears fired Matt Eberflus at the end of November, many names have surfaced as possible options, from young offensive coordinators (Ben Johnson) to retread defensive coaches (Mike Vrabel).

Even coaches like former Super Bowl champion Pete Carroll have expressed interest in the job. Now, you can add another former Super Bowl-winning coach to the list.

According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is a name to watch for the Bears vacant coaching job. Fowler mentions that he has talked with multiple people and believes the long-time head coach could be in play for the Bears.

"Pete Carroll might not be the only Super Bowl-winning coach vying for the Bears job. I've talked to multiple people who believe McCarthy -- should he leave Dallas -- could set his sights on Chicago. He would give the Bears much-needed experience and offensive acumen.

"Despite his rocky tenure in Dallas, McCarthy would stack up well if parachuting into this candidate pool and provide leadership. He turned 61 in November but seems to have the energy for the job. He's quite familiar with NFC North football, too. This might not graduate from a working theory stage, but enough people have mentioned the scenario to make it worth mentioning here."

McCarthy would be a polarizing option should he become a serious candidate. The 61-year-old coach has enjoyed plenty of success during his 18-year head coaching career with the Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy has compiled a record of 287-174-2 in the regular season and has 11 postseason wins, third among active coaches. He has just six losing seasons in his career, three of which occurred when his starting quarterback was lost for much of the season.

Though McCarthy has seen more success with the Packers, his tenure with the Cowboys has been solid. Prior to this season, McCarthy had three straight years with 12 wins, making the postseason in each. That's where the big problems lie.

McCarthy has just one postseason victory since 2017. His issues with game management or not having his team prepared have surfaced in recent years, such as last year when his Cowboys were decimated by the Packers in the wild card round.

Still, McCarthy's regular season success and ability to help young quarterbacks flourish could be appealing for Chicago. His contract expires at the end of the season, and the Cowboys haven't committed to retaining him following an injury-riddled 7-9 campaign with one game to go. Perhaps he earns an interview with the Bears and is seen as an option to bring rookie quarterback Caleb Williams along.
