Mike Maignan favourite to become the new vice-captain of France
According to RMC Sport, Mike Maignan (29) is the favourite to inherit the role of vice-captain of the France national team. Following Kylian Mbappé’s absence from the latest squad and Antoine Griezmann’s shock retirement, questions have been raised as to who will captain Les Bleus during the upcoming international break.
After Raphaël Varane and Hugo Lloris retired from international football, Didier Deschamps named the Real Madrid forward and Atlético Madrid attacker as his captain and vice-captain. With Griezmann retiring, the vice-captain role is now vacant. The AC Milan stopper is the favourite to take on this role.
In Deschamps’ most recent squad, Maignan is the most experienced player within the group at international level – the former Lille keeper has made 24 appearances for Les Bleus. The goalkeeper is the current favourite to be named vice-captain but N’Golo Kanté should also be considered if he is recalled again by the World Cup winning coach.
