'Might As Well Test Them Out One More Time': Maple Leafs' Steven Lorentz Breaks Down Celebration After Highlight Reel Goal

When Steven Lorentz scored the game-winning goal in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders, he wanted to test the glass one more time.

On Saturday, during warmups ahead of their game against the Washington Capitals, Lorentz jumped into the glass, his usual routine which helps him warm up his shoulders.

"Yeah, that's the only way you can really warm up the shoulders without running your teammates over," he said. "I just like getting used to the glass because it's different in every rink. I'll just hop into the glass, get the shoulders warm and that kind of gets me in the zone."

However, this time, something different occurred. His helmet got stuck in between the two panes of glass.

"I thought someone ripped it off my head or something," Lorentz said on Monday after practice. "I looked up and I had no idea how it happened. I must have moved a pane (of glass) and slid in at the perfect time."

So, after Lorentz scored his highlight reel goal against the Islanders on New Year's Eve, he jumped into the glass to celebrate. It was the 28-year-old's fourth goal in 38 games this season, three more than he had in the same amount of games last year.

"I kind of blacked out afterwards," Lorentz said after his goal. "One I'll remember. It was pretty cool to do that and then hear the building go alive like that. It's pretty cool."

And his celebration by jumping into the glass?

"The boards were just kind of there and I thought I might as well test them out one more time," the forward grinned. "It was pretty cool. It felt nice."

Toronto is up to six wins in their last 10 games. Fourteen of the Maple Leafs' 36 goals in the last 10 games have come from players who've been in the team's bottom-six (Bobby McMann, Max Domi, Nick Robertson, David Kampf, and Lorentz).

"It's huge for our confidence. Again, it's little things that we do that kind of goes unnoticed on the score sheet night in and night out. And we think we've done a pretty good job of that," Lorentz said.

"We obviously haven't put up a ton of points this season. But I mean, as long as we're winning hockey games, we don't care who scores the goals. And, you know, scoring is going to come and go from different guys up and down the lineup. The key thing is, is once playoff happens, that everybody's contributing in their own way."
