Miedema: Clear philosophy attracted me to City

Vivianne Miedema says it’s our attacking style of football that made her want to become a Manchester City player.

The Barclays Women’s Super League’s all-time leading scorer has moved to the Joie Stadium after seven years at Arsenal.

The 27-year-old forward netted 80 times in the WSL for the Gunners and will now look to extend her record as the league’s leading goal getter while wearing sky blue.

The Dutch international insists it was City’s belief in beautiful, progressive play that most stood out for her when she considered her options this summer.

“Having thought really hard about my future after leaving Arsenal, the main thing that popped up was that I wanted to be at a team who are playing good football,” she stated in her first official interview after joining City.

“I think in women’s football right now City have a clear philosophy, they obviously did well last season.

“If I look at the way I want to play, it really suits it. In the end, it's obviously a massive bonus as well that I stay in the WSL. I think it was the best fit for me.”

Miedema joins a plethora of exciting attacking options for Gareth Taylor, including WSL Golden Boot winner Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.

The Jamaican scored 21 times in the league last campaign, with the likes of Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, Mary Fowler and Miedema’s compatriot Jill Roord also hitting the back of the net regularly.

Miedema is excited to line up alongside those names and is confident her abilities complement the skills of those already at the Club.

“Looking to the future, I’ve always said I want to play with best players in the world and I think City have got that,” she said.

“Attacking wise, they’ve got so many different players, different qualities and I hope I can add some different qualities to that again.

“If you look back at last season, you can see the qualities Bunny has, Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly obviously play in the England national team as well.

“I’ve played with Jill [Roord] for so many years, so I’m pretty sure we’ll find each other straight away again and the depth in the team is only growing.

“If we can get the right combination in that sense – luckily it’s not up to me – it would be amazing to be part of that.

“I think we can have a lot of joy in front of goal.”

While she’s already enjoyed such a stellar career, our new No.6 expects to hit her peak while plying her trade at the Joie Stadium.

“I’m only 27 obviously. I haven’t played as much football as I would have wished over the past two years but I think and hope my best years are still to come,” she stated.

“I really hope that’s going to be here at City.

“I hope I’m going to be able to help the team as much as I can do.

“I am just really excited to be part of the team and for the girls to hopefully help me and get me back to my best.

“If I get back to my best again then we can achieve really nice things together.”
