Michigan used old Scott Frost comments as motivation in blowout win over Nebraska

Michigan apparently had some added motivation going into the Nebraska game.

You see, back when Nebraska coach Scott Frost was the head coach at Central Florida, UCF went in to Michigan Stadium and, by Frost’s estimation, gave the Wolverines a tough game, despite the 51-14 final score. Frost went so far as to say that UCF “outhit” Michigan, which had only 119 rushing yards on 41 attempts.

“It’s hard to say when the score is what it is, but we came in here and outhit those guys today,” Frost said. “Standing on the sideline, there was no doubt who was hitting harder. Our guys came in hungry and wanting to do that. It’s rare you can come into Michigan and rush for 300 yards on them. They had to run a fly sweep in the fourth quarter to get to 100.”

Michigan’s players did not forget Frost’s comment

When speaking with reporters after the game, Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich brought up Frost’s comments unprompted.

“There was a lot of things riding on this game which gave us extra motivation. Everyone knows about Coach Frost’s comments how they outhit us last time even though they lost by like 50 points, so we were motivated. There was plenty of fuel for us,” Winovich said.

“I think we outhit them today. I’m interested to see if maybe he has a different opinion on it.”

Winovich said it was something the team talked about throughout the week. Linebacker Devin Bush said defensive coordinator Don Brown even brought it up.

“Coach Brown came in the meeting and he re-stated what he (Frost) said two years ago about UCF. We really took that to heart. We wanted to make a statement where you say something, make sure it’s true,” Bush said.

Added offensive lineman Jon Runyan: “We took that to heart, we didn’t forget that, and we remembered over there the coach’s comments they had the last time we played against him. All week we talked about being tough.”

All that motivation showed in the Wolverines’ dominant 56-10 victory. Michigan jumped out to a 39-0 halftime lead and Nebraska could only muster 132 yards offensively for the game.

Michigan improved to 3-1 with the win while Nebraska dropped to 0-3.
