Michigan RB Blake Corum to return in 2023

Michigan running back Blake Corum will be back for the 2023 season.

Corum announced Monday that he would return for another season with the Wolverines after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the penultimate game of the 2022 regular season.

“My goals have always been about leaving an enduring legacy at the winningest program in the history of college football,” Corum wrote in his statement. “Motivated by my profound love for Michigan and commitment to my education, I have decided to return for another season. It is an honor to be a student-athlete at the University of Michigan.”

Corum was one of the best running backs in college football before his injury. He was Michigan’s workhorse running back when healthy and had 247 carries for 1,463 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. He was injured on a run in the Wolverines’ win over Illinois and attempted to play the next week against Ohio State. It was clear from the start of the Ohio State game that he wasn’t able to be effective and he missed the Big Ten championship game and the Wolverines’ loss to TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Despite missing the final two games of the season and hardly playing against Ohio State, Corum finished with 100 more carries than second-leading rusher Donovan Edwards. Edwards missed three games in 2022 and had 140 carries for 991 yards and seven scores.

With Corum back in the fold next season, he and Edwards are set to be the best 1-2 combination at running back in the country once again. Edwards will be a junior in 2023 and quarterback J.J. McCarthy is also set to return.

The only key offensive skill position piece Michigan is losing ahead of next season is wide receiver Ronnie Bell. He previously announced that he was heading to the NFL after catching 62 passes for 889 yards and four TDs.

The Michigan offense should be very good once again in 2023 with Corum, Edwards and McCarthy. Will coach Jim Harbaugh be back too? Harbaugh has said that he expects to be coaching Michigan next season but has an interview set up with the Denver Broncos and could also be in contention for other NFL head coaching jobs. Harbaugh is also the focus of an NCAA investigation after he allegedly misled NCAA investigators looking into Level II violations.
