Miami Marlins series-opening loss to Philadelphia Phillies delayed twice due to rain

The Miami Marlins’ series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park was delayed twice due to rain in the area.

It only delayed the inevitable.

Final score: Phillies 4, Marlins 1.

Miami falls to 49-60. Philadelphia improves to 61-49.

JT Realmuto and Jean Segura hit a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning against Braxton Garrett to put the Phillies ahead for good.

Realmuto also hit an RBI double in the first inning that scored Alec Bohm, who reached second base after second baseman Joey Wendle and right fielder Bryan De La Cruz collided going for a fly ball in right field. Bohm added a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning that scored Kyle Schwarber, who doubled, to end Garrett’s time on the mound.

JJ Bleday hit a solo home run to right field, the second homer of his MLB career, in the fourth inning for Miami’s only run of the game.

But the game had two separate delays — each about a half hour — that lengthened the game.

First pitch came at 7:37 p.m. after originally being scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. The groundscrew put the tarp on the field at about 6:15 p.m., 15 minutes before rain began falling at the ballpark.

The game officially went into its second delay at 9:59 p.m., with the Phillies’ Brandon Marsh two pitches into his at-bat against the Marlins’ Richard Bleier with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. It resumed again at 10:27 p.m.

This was the second consecutive game that the Marlins had to deal with a weather delay. Their series finale against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Sunday, a 3-0 win, was delayed 56 minutes due to rain.
