Miami Marlins deal Jazz Chisholm Jr. to Yankees as trade deadline selloff continues

The Miami Marlins’ expected selloff as the MLB trade deadline approaches continued Saturday as they dealt Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees.

The Marlins received three prospects in return from the Yankees, headlined by catcher Agustin Ramirez. The other two prospects coming to the Marlins are infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez.

Chisholm, 26, is one of MLB’s electrifying personalities and has a combination of speed and power that can gives him the potential to be one of the league’s top hitters when healthy — he missed significant time in 2022 and 2023 with injury. He entered Saturday hitting .249 with a .730 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, 13 home runs, 22 stolen bases in 30 attempts, 50 RBI, 14 doubles and 46 runs scored in 101 games this season. He was named the National League’s All-Star Game starting second baseman in 2022 before sustaining a stress fracture in his lower back that ended his season after just 60 games.

Chisholm then moved to center field before the 2023 season and has played all but three games there over the past two seasons.

Agustin Ramirez, 22, is listed as the No. 20 prospect in the Yankees’ system according to MLB Pipeline. In 87 games this season split between Double A and Triple A, Ramirez is hitting .269 with an .862 on-base-plus-slugging mark, 20 home runs, 69 RBI and 60 runs scored. MLB Pipeline’s scouting report of Ramirez notes that he “makes consistent contact and produces impressive exit velocities” and “showed more discipline and did a better job of using the entire field in 2023, fueling optimism that he’ll be able to tap into most of his plus raw power.” Defensively, Ramirez “lacks agility and soft hands, so his receiving, framing and blocking all need plenty of work. He has solid arm strength but a slow release.”

Serna, 22, is listed as the Yankees’ No. 19 prospect and has spent all season in High A. Abrahan Ramirez, 19, spent all season at the Yankees’ rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.

This is the Marlins’ second major deal in three days and the third overall of the season.

Miami on Thursday traded left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a pair of prospects in corner infielder Deyvison De Los Santos and center fielder Andrew Pintar. De Los Santos is now listed as the Marlins’ No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. Pintar is No. 19.

And in early May, the Marlins traded second baseman Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres for four prospects: outfielder Dillon Head (now Miami’s No. 6 prospect), outfielder Jakob Marsee (now Miami’s No. 11 prospect), first baseman Nathan Martorella (now Miami’s No. 12 prospect) and right-handed pitcher Woo Suk-Go.

The MLB trade deadline is 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the Marlins are likely far from done making moves with Miami having made virtually every player on the roster available.

Other players generating interest in the trade market are closer Tanner Scott, who is expected to be dealt over the next few days, and relievers Calvin Faucher and Declan Cronin.
