The Miami Hurricanes dropped a Heisman hype video for Cam Ward. Watch it here

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward (1) walks off the field after the Canes defeat the Florida State Seminoles in the during an NCAA football game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Garden, Florida on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

The Miami Hurricanes’ campaign for Cam Ward to win the Heisman Trophy has begun.

The Hurricanes posted a one-minute, 47-second video to social media on Tuesday documenting Ward’s rise from a zero-star recruit out of West Columbia, Texas, to being arguably the top quarterback in the country this season with Miami — his first and only year at UM after spending his first two seasons at FCS Incarnate Word and then another two at Washington State.

Entering this week, Ward ranks second in the country with 2,746 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns. His 174.68 passer rating is seventh nationally. Ward had thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdown in each of Miami’s first seven games before being held to 208 passing yards and no touchdowns in the Hurricanes’ 36-14 win over Florida State.

Bet MGM lists Ward with the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy at +275, behind only Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel (+225). Colorado athlete Travis Hunter (+400) and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty (+425) are the only other two within relative striking distance.

Bissainthe good to go

Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal on Monday said linebacker Wesley Bissainthe is good to go after leaving Saturday’s win over FSU in the fourth quarter.

“Wesley is full go,” Cristobal said.

Bissainthe had six tackles in the victory. On the season, the junior leads the team with 21 solo tackles and is second with 36 overall tackles. He also has two tackles for loss and an interception.

“It was a little scary the other night when he went down,” defensive coordinator Lance Guidry said. “It didn’t look good when his helmet came off and the way he acted, and I thought, ‘Man.’ But everything was good. Wesley’s having a good year. He’s playing really fast. He’s physical and really like the way he’s playing.”

Recruiting news

The Hurricanes have had a flurry of recruiting news over the past three days since the win over FSU.

It started Sunday with a commitment from Class of 2026 four-star cornerback Camdin Portis, the son of UM great Clinton Portis.

It continued on Monday when Class of 2025 four-star wide receiver Malachi Toney re-committed to the Hurricanes after backing off his pledge earlier this month.

Those two bits of good news, however, were then followed by Class of 2025 three-star offensive lineman Takaylen Muex announcing his de-commitment on Tuesday.

Stats and stuff

The Hurricanes rank fourth nationally and first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in time of possession, with the offense holding the ball for an average of 34:18.38 per game.

Miami leads the country in third-down conversion rates at 59.80 percent. The Hurricanes are also 10 for 13 on fourth down, including 10 for its past 12 and nine for 10 in conference play.

While they haven’t had to use him much, kicker Andres Borregales is 11 for 12 on field goals this season. His 91.7 percent success rate is tied for seventh nationally among kickers who have attempted at least 10 field goals.

He said it

“It’s Miami. Miami loves the winner. Always has. You look at the history of all the different teams and franchises that have played here, the coaches that have had success, they were tough S.O.Bs, and worked like absolute maniacs to produce a winner, and the city loves backing a winner. When teams win, they come out in full force and it’s a different kind of energy. I think anybody that’s been here for Miami Hurricanes national championships, Miami Dolphins Super Bowls, Miami Heat championships, the Panthers this past year, the Marlins, it takes on just an entirely different mood and mode as a city. We felt that. Our players felt that on Saturday. Just pulling up, it was so different. It was off the charts. And I think, we’ll see that trend continue to get stronger and stronger, and looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.” — Mario Cristobal on how team continues to harness energy like they did during sellout against FSU
