Update: Police charge Meridian man with 5 felonies. 3 kids were present during shooting

Meridian police arrested and charged a 35-year old man with five felonies Thursday after reports of shots fired, police said.

At roughly 6:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a man firing a gun at “unknown subjects” in Meridian, spokesperson Kelsey Johnston told the Idaho Statesman by phone. The incident occurred in a neighborhood near Linder and McMillan roads, Johnston said.

The Meridian man was charged with five felonies: one count of discharging a firearm at an occupied dwelling, one count of malicious injury to property and three counts of injury to a child. Johnston said three children were present while the shooting occurred.

She declined to comment on whether the children were the man’s or neighbors because of their age.

Police quickly determined that the subject was in a “state of mental health crisis,” according to a news release. Several nearby houses were hit by bullets, but no people were injured, police said.

Police were able to quickly deescalate the situation and arrest the man, according to the release.

Hunter Elementary School was notified of the incident, but it was resolved before the school day began, Johnston said. A communication about the incident was sent to parents.
