Meghan Markle’s Latest Look May Contain a Message to the Royal Family

Meghan Markle is a noted fan of fashion diplomacy–that is, wearing brands or motifs that align with her agenda. But is her latest look a nod to the royal family, or simply a coincidence?

On May 10, Markle joined Prince Harry in Nigeria, where the two are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, the sporting tournament for wounded veterans, which Harry founded in 2014. The trip followed on the heels of Harry’s solo trip to England, where he hosted another anniversary event.

That affair was attended by a number of the late Princess Diana’s relatives—including her brother, Charles Spencer—after King Charles and Prince William both declined Harry’s invitation, citing scheduling conflicts. According to the BBC, the king’s “full programme” included a garden party that was attended by several working royals.

A couple days later, for the occasion in Nigeria, the duke and duchess tore into their summer wardrobes: Meghan wore a dusty rose floor-length dress by Heidi Merrick, which she paired with a gold choker necklace and matching gold earrings. On her wrist she wore her Cartier Tank watch as well as her Cartier Love bracelet. Prince Harry matched the vibe to a tee in linen separates, which he paired with camel-colored desert boots.

Notably, the name of Markle’s dress is the Windsor, which is also the surname of the royal family. According to the Instagram account What Meghan Wore, the style is from 2018, meaning it may have been sitting in Markle’s closet for several years. Or maybe she sought it out secondhand, knowing that fans would quickly identify the “Windsor dress” and see it as a gesture of goodwill following Harry’s snub in England. The truth is, we may never know!

To kick off their 72-hour trip, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle delivered the welcome address at the inaugural mental health summit, put on by the GEANCO Foundation, at the Lightway Academy in Abuja. After Harry concluded his speech, Meghan showered him in praise. “You see why I’m married to him?” she said, per People, when she was handed the mic. “It’s so inspiring because he speaks the truth.”

Speaking to the children of the academy in her own speech, Meghan said, “Every single one of you has a story. We all have our story. And there’s no shame in any single one of your stories. Even on the hardest days or darkest days, everything is a pillar of your strength by each of you being there.”

She also shared a sweet anecdote about the couple’s daughter, Lilibet, who is almost three: “A few weeks ago, she looked at me and saw her reflection in my eyes. She said, ‘Mama, I see me in you.’ Now, she was talking literally, but I held onto those words in a different way. I thought, Yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you. But as I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”

Clearly the woman is a fan of metaphors, so maybe a message hidden in a dress isn’t so off base. Most importantly, though, Meghan is doing good and looking good. What more can the royal family want?
