Hough’s Sean Brady, The Observer’s football player of the week, ‘is just special, man’

Hough High football coach Shawn Baker says senior wide receiver Sean Brady is “a special talent, man.”

Brady was named The Charlotte Observer’s high school football player of the week for the first full slate of games this season after he set a school-record for receiving against Rock Hill Northwestern Aug. 23.

Brady caught six passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. It was the 21st best performance ever by a receiver from Mecklenburg County.

“Northwestern came out and kind of did what they do,” Baker said. “They played Cover 1 and Cover 0 and Sean is kind of a mismatch with a lot of people, and they couldn’t stay in front. He was running routes across the safety’s face and once he got the ball in his hands, and they’re behind him, it’s like lights out. You’re not going to catch him.”

Brady, 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, has committed to Gardner-Webb. Baker thinks he could be a track star at Hough, but said he has a job after school.

Baker also thinks Brady — who had five catches for 70 yards and a score in a win over Myers Park Saturday — could be in for a big year.

“We played Sean out of position last year,” Baker said. “We played him more outside because of the dynamic of our team, but this year, I made it a point of emphasis that we would play him at slot (receiver) and move him around more. He’s in the natural position now that he’ll play in college.”

Brady is also well ahead of his junior year stats, when he caught 36 passes for 449 yards and five touchdowns. And Baker thinks Brady is just starting to show glimpses of the player he’ll become in college.

“Gardner-Webb is getting a dynamic kid,” Baker said. “He’s a kid that is going to work hard and make every rep like it’s his last. The kid works on his route running so much. He knows he’s good. That’s one thing I love about Sean. You don’t have to tell him he’s good. He’s got that swagger about himself. He knows. And to be a good football player, you’ve got to have that.

“We’ll miss him when he leaves, but, man, they are getting a good one.”
