‘His get off is crazy.’ Hough’s Cameron Cyr is The Observer’s football player of the week

Hough High football coach Shawn Baker said that senior Cameron Cyr isn’t the biggest defensive end you’ll find in North Carolina, but that “his get off is crazy.”

Translation? When the ball is snapped, Cyr moves so fast that offensive linemen have a hard time blocking him.

Perhaps that’s why Cyr — The Observer’s player of the week for Week 3 of the high school football season — has seven sacks in three games. He was named player of the week after getting seven tackles and three sacks in a 41-0 win over Carolina Forest (SC) Sept. 6.

“Man, Cam is such a hard worker,” Baker said, “and some people think he’s a little undersized, because he’s 6-2, 220, but his get off is crazy. I mean, the kid has a 4.5 GPA and he does everything the right way and does everything you ask him to. Everybody at school likes him. On the field, he’s able to drop in coverage, rush the passer, blitz in a couple different ways. So we were just happy to see him get that player of the week.”

A year ago, Cyr had 38 tackles and five sacks and he worked hard in the off-season, confidence high, thinking he could have a big senior year.

“The main thing was me to get my weight up,” Cyr said. “I wasn’t much more than 190 pounds last year playing defensive end and defensive tackle and I figured gaining weight and getting in the weight room and gaining strength would be a big factor in my success this year.”

Cyr, who added 25 pounds, picked up an offer from Davidson in the spring and is starting to get attention from Ivy League schools, Baker said. But Cyr said that size question still comes up.

“I think my size is the main thing holding me back” from getting more offers, he said. “But I try to make up for it with how I play.”

Cyr’s seven sacks ranks ninth in America so far, and some of the players ahead him have played four games, not three. He ranks fourth in North Carolina.

And Baker marvels at Cyr’s most recent three-sack game, in South Carolina, because he did against a team that is more run-heavy than most.

“For him to get three sacks in that game is incredible,” Baker said. “We brought him in the A-Gap. We looped him around, and like I said, the one thing that deceives you is that you don’t think he can run. But he can and he works hard like that all the time. His work doesn’t go unnoticed and hopefully one of these schools will take a chance and see what kind of player he is.”

Cyr plans to keep putting out the type of film he’s compiled so far — with one difference.

He said the rest of his season will be better than his first three games.

“There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “It’s going back and watching film. I see a few plays I left out there and things I maybe could’ve done better and executed a little bit better. So I think the second half of my season will be better, too.

“Most definitely.”
