As explained in the video released by the Department of Player Safety, the incident involved a high cross-check that connected with Garland's head. The video also explains that this was "not a routine motion to box out an opponent or use gain body position." The three-game suspension. McDavid's suspension from 2019 is also mentioned in the explanation as to why Edmonton's captain received three games.

McDavid's suspension is an important move by the league, as it shows that no player is above the rules. Despite calls from fans, media members and former players that McDavid's actions were justified, the league saw the incident as dangerous, leading to the suspension. While players getting into scrums is not out of the ordinary, McDavid's actions were violent and could have led to serious injury.
