McDaniel gives updates on injuries, Tart’s release. And Dolphins sign defensive tackle

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Wednesday that cornerback Jalen Ramsey is dealing with a injury, but it doesn’t sound major.

Ramsey missed the Monday and Tuesday practices after participating in every previous training camp practice.

“We are being proactive with Jalen on something he’s dealing with to make sure he’s full-tilt as we know he loves to be,” McDaniel said.

The Dolphins also have been without cornerback Ethan Bonner, who has been sidelined this week with concussion symptoms.

And Miami has been short-handed at safety, with Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer (finger injury) not participating in 11-on-11 work on Monday and Tuesday.

McDaniel said Holland is “working through something minor. He has been involved every day.” McDaniel listed his status as “day to day.”

Meanwhile, Benito Jones, the front-runner for the starting nose tackle job, has missed five consecutive practices and is “day-to-day,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel declined to say if left guard Isaiah Wynn’s current injury is to the same quad that was injured last October in Philadelphia, ending his season. McDaniel would say only Wynn’s injury is a “lower body injury” and he’s dealing with “compounding stuff.”

He remains on the physically unable to perform list, and McDaniel has said he will tell reporters when he gets closer to playing.

The Dolphins have listed Robert Jones as the first-team left guard the past two weeks.

McDaniel was asked if he’s concerned that receiver Odell Beckham Jr. remains on PUP list and isn’t running routes.

“I wouldn’t have a level of concern,” McDaniel said. “As the process [unfolds], you have to put one foot in front of the other. What you don’t want and I know Odell doesn’t want is getting on the grass and leaving it. His teammates know he’s working hard. He didn’t sign up for football to be in meetings, even though my meetings are super entertaining.”

McDaniel addressed other issues:

Why was defensive tackle Teair Tart cut this week? “From a scheme standpoint, it wasn’t totally a fit,” McDaniel said.

On Jaelan Phillips’ progress in his first two days off PUP: “He is who I thought he was. This is a guy who’s on a mission that is bigger than just being a player on an NFL team. He’s trying to position himself where he feels he’s the top of his class at what he does. I’ve seen some maturity from him in understanding the bigger picture. He’s very, very disciplined in not overstepping the boundaries outlined for him.”

On rookie edge player Chop Robinson: “You have a lot of hope for first-round draft picks when you come to your team. Chop has gone about it the way you really hope... to really add value to the team. He’s earning the respect of his teammates each day, and he’s doing it through work, strain, how he handles coaching as a rookie.”

McDaniel said he and general manager Chris Grier thought this draft class had players “who could contribute early. I’ve seen multiple draft picks, from our first to our last, take advantage of opportunities.”

McDaniel said Washington coach Dan Quinn — whose team will practice against the Dolphins on Thursday and play them on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium — has had a “gigantic” influence on his career.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE SIGNED

The Dolphins signed defensive tackle Robert Cooper, according to a source.

Cooper, who is 6-2 and 323 pounds, has spent time with the Eagles and Seahawks during the past 15 months but hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game.

He will compete with Brandon Pili, Isaiah Mack and Jonathan Harris for the backup nose tackle job behind Benito Jones.

He had 123 tackles, including 13 for loss and 2.5 sacks, in five years playing at FSU (2018 to 2022).
