McCann says FA Cup cash important to Doncaster
Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup will be financially important as they enter the second half of the season.
Rovers beat Championships side Hull City 5-4 after a dramatic penalty shootout and were rewarded with a home tie against Premier League side Crystal Palace next month.
And a delighted McCann insisted the financial side of FA Cup glory for a League Two side hoping to get up a division cannot be underestimated.
"I'm pleased for the players and the effort they put in. I'm pleased for the fans, and I'm pleased for the football club," he said.
"Financially, it's tremendously important."
Doncaster are currently in the final play off spot in League Two after a difficult run with just three wins in their past 14 games.
The Rovers boss called on his side to use renewed self belief from beating a side two divisions above them to reignite their push for promotion.
"I'm just pleased in my team and the commitment they showed. If we can show that level of discipline and aggression in our division we will score from a lot of chances.
"It gives us a benchmark and gives us something to build on."
Goalscorer Luke Molyneux, who put Rovers ahead and then scored his penalty in the shootout, had been hoping for Newcastle or Liverpool to come out of the hat in round four.
But he maintained they deserved a day in the spotlight against top flight opposition after a display against Hull City full of character and resilience.
"I feel like we deserved it. The lads were amazing today and we all dug in through the game especially when they got a goal back," he said.
"They are a Championship club and they have got good players and keep the ball really well. I think we just had to be patient and defensively solid.
"When we go our chance on the counter we took it."
