Mbappe’s European Golden Boot dream likely to remain unfulfilled again this season
It is no secret that Kylian Mbappe is among the world’s most elite strikers alongside names like Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.
Yet, the player has failed to establish himself as the top scorer in Europe and win the European Golden Boot even once in his career.
In the past three seasons, he has scored 28, 29 and 27 goals for PSG but came 2nd, 3rd and 3rd respectively, painfully falling short of the pinnacle position.
This year, the odds do not look promising by any mark.
In the top 50
Mbappe’s start to life in Madrid has been torrid and the player has been a shadow of his former self in front of goal. He has been missing big chances aplenty and his record in penalties recently has also been poor.
With eight goals and 16 points so far, the Frenchman is in 50th place and is far behind the player he usually competes with in Europe.
For comparison, Robert Lewandowski currently leads the race with 16 goals so far while Harry Kane is in second place with 14 goals. Alex Tamm, who plays for Kalju FC, is in third place despite scoring 28 goals due to a lower coefficient.
Vinicius Jr., notably, is on the same tally as Kylian Mbappe despite playing fewer games and in a position on the flank.
What’s more is that had the Frenchman even met his xG in terms of goals, he would be in the top-10 alongside Raphinha but he has massively underperformed on that front.
For Mbappe to come back and restore himself in the race for the Golden Boot this season will require a massive turnaround but not one he is not capable of. For that, however, it is essential that he regains his confidence at the earliest.
