Matt Eberflus says no changes coming to Bears offensive line

The Chicago Bears offensive line has been abysmal through the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season, where quarterback Caleb Williams has been under consistent pressure. That includes Sunday night's loss to the Houston Texans, where Williams was pressured 36 times and sacked seven times.

On Wednesday, head coach Matt Eberflus said there wouldn't be any changes to the offensive line.

"Right now, no," he said, explaining that they're "looking for continuity."

While it's not the answer fans would like to hear, considering this current combination has been a mess, it makes sense considering the current injury situation. The Bears simply don't have the personnel to implement such changes along the interior of the offensive line, where there are questions at center and right guard.

Ryan Bates, who was acquired in an offseason trade, is on injured reserve and isn't eligible to return for at least an additional three games. Bates was brought in to compete at center with Coleman Shelton, who's gotten the starting nod due to Bates' injury, and it hasn't worked out well for the Bears. But Bates was also in contention for the right guard job, which is occupied by the struggling Nate Davis.

Matt Pryor can play every position on the line, outside of center, so he could be a potential option. Rookie Kiran Amegadjie, who missed the offseason recovering from a quad injury, is more of a tackle, which is the least of the offensive line's problems.

Then there's left guard Teven Jenkins, who didn't practice Wednesday with a thigh injury. If Jenkins can't go, it would be Pryor getting the nod at left guard. But Eberflus is confident Jenkins will play in Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts.

"We do feel good about it," said the Bears coach. "We'll see where it goes for tomorrow. It's a power thing and then him feeling comfortable and the trainers feeling comfortable for him to come back in."

There's big concerns about Chicago's offensive line through these first two weeks, especially as it pertains to Williams' development. The blueprint has been set for opposing defenses when facing the Bears: Bring the pressure, especially along the interior, and Chicago needs to find a quick resolution.
