Matt Eberflus explains why Bears rookie Caleb Williams will improve in Week 2

Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams had a rough outing in his first NFL regular-season start. Although, thanks to a dominant defense and special teams, he did snap a nasty losing streak for No. 1 rookie quarterbacks dating back to 2002.

Williams, like most rookies do, had a rough debut. He completed 14-of-29 passes for 93 yards with no touchdowns and a 55.7 passer rating. There were some overthrown passes and perhaps some nerves at play. But Williams didn't turn the ball over, which was a big reason why Chicago was able to mount a comeback win on the shoulders of their defense and special teams.

Coach Matt Eberflus explained why he believes Williams was bounce back after a rough first game and show improvement from week to week.

"Just the character, the man he is," Eberflus said after the game. "He has belief in himself. He's comfortable in his own skin. He's got teammates that believe in him and trust him and know him and that he can lean in on as we go through this week and get better. That's what we're going to do this week."

There's no sugarcoating it: Williams was bad in his first start. But it's certainly no cause for concern at this point of his young career, especially considering how some of the NFL greats fared in their first NFL action and in their rookie season. For Williams, it will be about making incremental improvement throughout the year.

Rookie growing pains are to be expected. But Williams has shown in the past that he can bounce back after rough performances, which the Bears are going to need if they stand a chance at beating the Houston Texans, a team many have pegged as Super Bowl contenders, on Sunday night.

"I think it applies whether it's a win or loss, you expect yourself to play a certain way," Williams said after the Titans game. "You expect yourself to go out there and perform a certain way, to make passes, whether it's just -- whether routine pass or whether it's just an insane kind of whatever the case may be kind of play.

"So that didn't happen (Sunday). So it's enough motivation for me. We're going to somebody else's home this week too, and so it's enough motivation for me to go out there, get better this week and make sure that I perform differently next week."
