Mason Greenwood completes permanent Man Utd exit

Mason Greenwood is officially no longer a Manchester United player after completing a permanent transfer to Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille.

The 22-year-old has moved for a fee of around £25m, including add-ons, while United are widely reported to have retained a sell-on clause of as much as 50% for a possible future transfer.

Greenwood will wear Marseille's number 10 shirt in the forthcoming season.

A statement from his now former club read: "Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer. The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career."

The move comes as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves Stade Velodrome to join Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah, having scored 30 goals in all competitions last season.

Greenwood's arrival had already been met with backlash once it became clear Marseille were working on a deal, with the club urged by the city's mayor not to proceed with the transfer.

The player, who spent last season on loan in La Liga with Getafe, last played for Manchester United in January 2022, prior to his arrest that month. He was later charged with assault, attempted rape and coercive control, although the prosecution dropped the case in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew and the chance of securing a conviction was massively reduced.

United went on to conduct their own internal investigation. The club were initially preparing to reintegrate Greenwood into the first-team squad until a major backlash led to a U-turn.
