Maryland will be down a starter on its offensive line come the 2017 season, as left guard Mike Minter will move on from football after graduating this spring.

Minter explained the decision in a Q&A with the Severna Park (Md.) Voice, saying his body is finished with the game and he is ready to move on to the real world:

This was my last season. I’m done playing football and I’m actually going to start in the real world now. My body’s been through hell and back the past four years, and I’m looking at a lot of job offers now. Before the season, I thought maybe [I’d play another year], but my body’s done, and in my mind I’m ready to start real life. I could have graduated earlier, but I want to play this season.

Minter started 11 games for the 6-7 Terrapins in 2016, and he started the first three games of the 2015 season before suffering a season-ending labrum injury. That came after Minter suffered a knee injury that cost him all of 2013, his first season with the program.

Minter details in the Q&A plenty of other body parts that ailed him throughout his career, although he says he has no regrets about playing football.

Minter, who made the Big Ten all-academic team three times, would have been a redshirt senior in 2017. He likely would have had the chance to apply for a sixth year of eligibility, given the time lost due to his injury history.

Minter had entered College Park as a walk-on before earning a scholarship in 2015.
