Olympique Marseille are set to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Fabrizio Romano claims that  United have agreed a deal with the Ligue 1 side worth €30 million, including a 40-50% sell-on clause.

Greenwood’s transfer has stirred controversy due to his past allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault, despite the charges being dropped.

Marseille mayor Benoît Payan has publicly condemned the signing, expressing his strong opposition during an interview with RMC.

“Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable.”

“Hitting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Attacking his wife in this way is unworthy of a man and I believe he cannot have a place in this team,” Payan stated.

He further emphasized that the values of Marseille and Olympique de Marseille are incompatible with such behaviour, calling the potential signing a disgrace.

Greenwood, now 22, is expected to leave Old Trafford with 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances.

His potential was once considered a key part of United’s future, but his departure signals a significant change.

Despite his escape from more severe consequences, Greenwood is expected to face significant resistance wherever he plays next.

Marseille’s mayor has vowed to urge the club’s president to cancel the transfer, highlighting the backlash and resistance Greenwood is likely to face at his new club.

This controversy comes at a time when Marseille are looking to strengthen their squad, yet they must now navigate the ethical and public relations implications of this high-profile signing.
