Maresca shows ruthless side as he details why he won’t be making “useless” decision against Morecambe
Enzo Maresca has opened up on why Ben Chilwell won’t feature in the FA Cup against Morecambe on Saturday, which could have been a farewell to Stamford Bridge for the defender.
It was made clear to Chilwell in pre-season that he wasn’t part of Maresca’s plans and he was sent to train away from the first team, but a summer exit failed to materialise.
The England international is back training with the first team, but he’s only played 45 minutes of football against Barrow in the Carabao Cup, and has been told he can leave the club.
Maresca on Chilwell exit
Chilwell is one of a number of players along with the likes of Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka who Chelsea are looking to move on.
In fairness to the 27-year-old he’s not made a fuss and has got his head down and trained hard, but Maresca has stuck to his word and it seems he’s played his final game for the club.
Saturday’s FA Cup tie represents a rare possibility for Chilwell to feature, and a chance to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans, but Maresca has explained why that won’t be happening.
“I didn’t discuss with Ben about that,” Maresca told the Evening Standard when asked whether he’d spoken to Chilwell about leaving him out of the squad.
“I don’t need to discuss with him, just as I don’t need to discuss with Cesare.
“Probably for them it’s better to act like the way we want to act tomorrow for them.
“I think Ben wants to play since we start, not only tomorrow,” Maresca added.

“[But] we started six months ago and unfortunately for my decision, he didn’t get minutes, now to give him a chance in the last game [before] probably he can leave, I think it’s useless.”
Whilst it might seem harsh you can understand why and Chelsea won’t want to jeopardise a potential transfer through an injury or making Chilwell cup tied, although there’s not believed to be many suitors for him.
