Maresca highlights where Enzo Fernandez is “improving a lot” as he praises recent form
Enzo Maresca has been impressed with the recent form of Enzo Fernandez and highlighted two areas he believes he’s improved in a lot.
Fernandez arrived at Chelsea for £106m from Portuguese side Benfica in January 2023 and made an instant impact in Graham Potter’s struggling side.
Last season was difficult for the World Cup winner with a lack of structure in Mauricio Pochettino’s side, whilst the Argentine was also playing through a hernia issue, which he subsequently underwent surgery on.
Maresca on where Fernandez has improved
Fernandez started the season in the side, but lost his place to Romeo Lavia against Liverpool in October and didn’t start the following games against Newcastle, Manchester United or Arsenal.
The 23-year-old impressed from the bench against the Gunners and was named in the starting line-up against Leicester and put in a man of the match performance as he set up Nicolas Jackson and scored himself.
Fernandez also scored last weekend against Aston Villa, whilst he recorded another assist in the 5-1 win against Southampton on Wednesday night.
The Argentina international has two goals and three assists in his last four league games and is arguably playing the best football of his Chelsea career.
Fernandez looks fully fit for the first time in a while, as highlighted by the fact he covered the most the ground of any Chelsea player in the win against Leicester.
Maresca has been pleased with Fernandez’s recent form and detailed two areas in which the midfielder has really improved.
“He is improving a lot especially in terms of understanding the game and the position,” he told his pre-match press conference.
