Enzo Maresca has defender under-fire Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and said the Spaniard is not the only player in his squad making mistakes.

Sanchez gifted Wolves a goal during Chelsea’s 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday, the latest mistake in an error-prone campaign.

Only Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric (5) has made more errors leading to a goal among goalkeepers than Sanchez (4) in the Premier League this season.

Summer signing Filip Jorgensen is an option to replace Sanchez, though has made just two Premier League appearances since his arrival from Villarreal. However, despite concerns around the 27-year-old’s showings, Maresca has insisted Sanchez retains his full choice.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Manchester City this weekend, Maresca said: “I fully trust Robert Sanchez. He’s okay. I understand it can happen.

“How many times Moi [Caicedo] miss a pass? Many times. How many times does Nico [Jackson] miss a goal? Many times. How many times does Noni [Madueke] miss a cross? Many times. It is not something strange, it is part of the job.”

Chelsea travel to face City this weekend with just two points between the teams in the table. The latter have endured a difficult campaign and are 12 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Having won the last four Premier League titles, it has been a sharp decline for the Citizens. However, Maresca – who previously worked at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola – has backed City to bounce back.

“It is normal, it can happen. What is not normal is the amount of years they won trophies.

“What is normal is what is going on now. For sure, they will be back to many trophies soon.

“My relationship with Pep and the club is very good. I have said many times my contact is very good, I will always be grateful for the trust they showed in me.

“Any club, any moment, any players. Most clubs who have this moment, they are done, but he will be okay.”
