Marcus Mariota is embracing life as a proud #GirlDad to his daughter, Makaia Kei Mariota.
The Washington Commanders quarterback and his wife, Kiyomi, welcomed Makaia on Dec. 7, 2022, a milestone the couple joyfully announced on Instagram.
Underneath a family photo, the new parents wrote, “December 7th, 2022. Marcus and Kiyomi welcomed their daughter Makaia Kei Mariota into the world 💕 officially a #girldad.”
The transition into fatherhood has profoundly shaped Marcus’ perspective on life.
“Regardless of what I do, the best moment of my day is coming home and she says ‘dada,’ so that in itself makes everything worthwhile," he told reporters in June 2024, per the Hawaiian Sports Radio Network. "I’m excited to just help her go through her life and give her that perspective that I’ve been able to gain from her.”

She was born on Dec. 7th, 2022
Marcus and Kiyomi announced the birth of their daughter on Instagram, with a family photo.
Makaia’s arrival during football season was a challenge Kiyomi candidly discussed in the NFL Netflix documentary Quarterback, which followed the Mariota family during their parenting journey.
“Honestly, expecting our first child during football season, I was a little nervous, just because we were going to be so far from family,” she shared in 2023.
Her mom found out she was pregnant on April Fools Day
Marcus and Kiyomi found out that they’d be welcoming their first child on April Fools Day in 2021. In an episode of Quarterback, Marcus shared how the news made him feel.
“I thought she was joking initially,” he said. “Then there’s a whole bunch of excitement, and then ‘how are we going to do this?’ ”
She goes to games with her dad
The family shared a sweet picture together at a Washington Commanders game in November 2024. Makaia wore bright yellow, matching the colors of her dad’s team — even down to her shoes.
Marcus’ foundation, Motiv8, posted the photo on Instagram with the sweet caption, “Blessed beyond words.”
Makaia was also pictured on Instagram attending a Washington Spirit game with her parents in April 2024.
She visited her dad at training camp
In August 2024, Makaia visited her dad at training camp. Photos shared on Instagram captured Makaia high-fiving players as her dad warmed up, proudly sporting Washington Commanders gear to support his team and enjoying a ride on Marcus’ shoulders.
The playful caption summed up the day: “Camp but make it about Makaia.”
Her parents also have two dogs
Makaia is growing up with two dogs named Jaqua and Swoosh.
The Frenchie and Boston Bull mixes were pictured giving Makaia kisses in a series of snaps shared on the dogs’ Instagram in October 2023 with a caption reading, “We love our sissie (most of the time).”
She celebrated her first Easter in matching outfits
The family celebrated Makaia’s first Easter in 2023. To commemorate the milestone, Marcus and Kiyomi shared photos from the day on Instagram.

She’s being raised to give back
Makaia has been included in her parents' philanthropy from a young age.
During the unveiling of a home Marcus helped build with Habitat for Humanity, he talked about how giving back is a family tradition. “It’s something my family has taught me since I was a kid,” he told News Channel 5. “I’m continuing the tradition of my family and it’s just important to give back.”
Makaia is already being included in this tradition, making frequent appearances at events for Marcus and Kiyomi’s Motiv8 Foundation, which works to provide sports and healthy lifestyle programming to children, according to their website.
After the organization's fourth annual wine event in 2024, the family shared a photo on Instagram, celebrating the day’s success.
