Federico Chiesa to Liverpool: Potential Game-Changer Amid Salah’s Uncertain Future

The transfer window is closing, and Liverpool fans are buzzing with anticipation. Federico Chiesa, Juventus’ dynamic winger, has been linked with a move to Anfield. In the latest episode of the Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, Gab Marcotti shared his insights with host Dave Davis on what this transfer could mean for both clubs and Chiesa himself.

Juventus’ Financial Woes and Chiesa’s Exit

Juventus has been dealing with financial challenges in the wake of COVID-19, compounded by other factors such as the aftermath of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. As Marcotti explained, “They made enormous losses during COVID, and afterwards… It’s not just because of Cristiano Ronaldo… but obviously the ownership has changed as well.” Chiesa, one of Juventus’ highest earners, is on a contract worth around 13 million euros gross per year, which translates to about £200,000 per week.

Given these circumstances, Juventus seems eager to offload the winger, especially with only a year left on his contract. Marcotti highlighted the club’s predicament: “With a year left… most clubs either move the player or they extend the deal. I think Juventus don’t feel that they want to extend the deal because he is a really, really big earner for where they are now.”

Chiesa’s Fit at Liverpool

For Liverpool, the prospect of signing Chiesa presents an intriguing opportunity, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future. Marcotti made an astute observation: “I would take it as a sign that maybe Mo’s not coming back next year… I don’t know that you would want to spend £200k per week for somebody to be Mo Salah’s backup not just this season but for the coming years as well.”

Chiesa’s versatility could be a valuable asset for Liverpool. He can play on either wing and even as a central forward in certain formations. However, his injury history raises concerns. Marcotti noted that despite these injuries, “He is still a quick, dynamic player.” If he can stay fit, Chiesa could offer Liverpool much-needed depth and the ability to rotate their forward line more effectively.

The Numbers Game: Transfer Fee and Wages

Liverpool’s transfer strategy under Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes has always been about getting the right deal. With Juventus reportedly willing to accept a fee in the region of 12-15 million pounds, the financial aspect of the deal is crucial. Marcotti pointed out, “You can’t just think of… the fee and the wages together… He’s on a big wage now… If he got the same money he’s on now, £200k per week, he would probably be the second highest-paid Liverpool forward.”

This raises the question of whether Liverpool would be willing to commit to such a high wage for a player who may not be a guaranteed starter. Marcotti speculated that if the deal were to happen, it might indicate that Salah’s time at Anfield could be nearing its end: “If he does come… it’s close to the money he’s on now… I would take it as a sign that maybe Mo’s not coming back next year.”

Strategic Move For Future?

As the transfer window nears its end, the potential signing of Federico Chiesa could be a pivotal moment for Liverpool. While the financial and injury concerns are valid, his ability to provide cover and competition for Salah makes him an attractive option. The key will be finding the right balance in terms of the transfer fee and wages.

As Marcotti aptly summarised, “All these things come into the consideration, which is what makes this a fascinating decision… and I guess that’s why Michael Edwards makes all that money, right? He gets to make these tough choices.”

Liverpool fans will be watching closely to see if this move materializes, and if it does, it could signal the beginning of a new era at Anfield—one where Federico Chiesa plays a crucial role in the club’s success.
