The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Friday morning that they have placed forward Andreas Johnsson on long-term injury reserve due to a leg injury he suffered against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the team has recalled forwards Nic Petan and Pontus Aberg, along with defenceman Martin Marincin.

Johnsson will be out for a minimum of three weeks and will be reassessed by the team’s medical staff after the holidays.

Toronto is heading on a Western road trip, beginning with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday before facing off against all three Western Canadian teams next week. With Johnsson heading to LTIR, it gives the Leafs the extra cap room needed in order to call-up the three skaters for extra bodies during the upcoming time away from Scotiabank Arena.

Johnsson, 25, has six goals and 16 points in 30 games this season on the top line with Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

Petan and Marincin have appeared in games for the Maple Leafs this season, the forward netting three assists in 13 appearances, while the defenceman is pointless through seven.

The 26-year-old Aberg was signed as a free agent this summer, but was sent down to the Toronto Marlies prior to the start of the season. Through 22 games, the winger has 10 goals and 24 points in the AHL.
