Maple Leafs recall defenceman Rasmus Sandin

The Toronto Maple Leafs continued to shuffle the deck of their defensive pairings in hopes of righting a three-game losing skid on Monday, recalling prospect Rasmus Sandin from the AHL.

Sandin rejoins the Leafs after a six-game stint with the team to open the season. He collected two assists in those six contests, playing just under 12 minutes per game.

That was under previous head coach Mike Babcock, of course, and it will be interesting to note how new Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe elects to use the electric 19-year-old. In 21 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, Sandin recorded two goals and 15 points. He played 44 games under Keefe last season with the Marlies as well.

Sandin is fresh off winning best defenceman at the the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, where he scored three times and added seven assists in seven games for Sweden.

Toronto’s blue line could use the boost, as Jake Muzzin remains on injured reserve after breaking his foot blocking a shot in late December.
