Would Maple Leafs Acquire Veteran Kraken Center? The Answer Is Yes -- And Here's Why
The Seattle Kraken are set to resume their 2024-25 season, and there are rumors Kraken GM Ron Francis may be dangling one veteran center in particular in trade talks. We’re referring to 33-year-old pivot Yanni Gourde, who has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Leafs search for a center who can play on the third line.
Gourde is a couple seasons removed from posting 21 goals and 48 points, and he’s currently in the final season of a six-year contract that carries an annual value of $5.166-million. Gourde’s individual statistics have fallen off, as he has put up only five goals and 15 points in 32 games this season. But on a Leafs team that’s significantly better than the Kraken, Gourde could thrive in Toronto.
The Leafs’ delicate cap situation means Seattle may have to retain some salary, but that should allow Francis to ratchet up his asking price in any trade. Toronto could include a young player such as right winger Nick Robertson in a Gourde trade, and if the Kraken do retain some salary, it might lead to Robertson and a third-round draft pick. That would be a nice haul for someone who isn’t part of Seattle’s long-term plans.
The Kraken are at a point of their season where (pardon the pun) they have to fish or cut bait with many of their veterans who are pending UFAs. But Gourde’s Stanley Cup championship experience makes him particularly valuable. And whether it’s Toronto or another team that winds up acquiring Gourde, the Kraken are almost assuredly going to part ways with him.
It’s just a matter of when, not if Gourde is dealt, but if he does go to the Leafs, nobody should be surprised.
