How Many Music-Loving Blueshirt Fans Know The Rangers Victory Song

When the Rangers won their third Stanley Cup in 1940 there were celebrations of many kinds including among the show business gentry.

Stars of stage, screen and radio also were hockey fans not to mention those in the hit musical field. One of them, J. Fred Coots, composed many tunes on The Hit Parade including "Love Letters In The Sand" and others.

No sooner had coach Frank Boucher's Blueshirts sipped the 1940 champagne, Coots sat down at his piano and felt inspired to compose a "Rangers Victory Song" complete with sheet music to go with it.

The words and music both were done by J.Fred who dedicated it to Rangers patriarch Lester Patrick. The tune opened with an introduction followed by the main chorus. The words went as follows:

Listen to the cheering of the people in the stands,

Twenty-thousand hockey bugs and each a Ranger fan!

It's plain as day to see they want a victory!

All get together now, strike up the band.

CHORUS

Just keep your stick on the puck,

And don't get down on your luck

That's THE RANGERS VIC-TRY SONG!

Get through the enemy's goal.

With all your heart and your soul

That's THE RANGERS VIC-TRY SONG!.

You've got to fight, Rangers fight!

With a grin on your chin!

Tonight is the night.

So get in there and win!

The game is worth any price,

Go on and put it on ice....

That's THE RANGERS VIC TRY SONG!

At the old Garden, Gladys (Two D's) Goodding played J.Fred Coots' victory song on the arena organ each time the Blueshirts skated on ice.

It also has been sung from time to time and sounds wonderful when an accomplished pianist hits the keyboard.

The original sheet music with piano is hard to find but the entire musical version from the sheet music is on page 46 of METRO ICE, written by Tom Sarro and The Maven.
