At his pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s game vs Augsburg, head coach Vincent Kompany gave an update on Bayern’s goalkeeping situation.

Earlier in the week, Manuel Neuer cut short a team training, while today the veteran number one once again cur short training as he is dealing with rib problems. A final test will be conducted on Neuer before tomorrow’s game against Augsburg to determine whether he will start or not reports Bild.

On the keeper situation, Kompant said:

“We assume that Manu will be able to play tomorrow. But if he didn’t make it, then it will be Daniel Peretz. He did very well in the last two games with the national team, unfortunately against Belgium. Sven Ulreich is unavailable for private reasons, I can’t say more”

Daniel Peretz had a strong international break. While away with his national team the 24-year-old kept two clean sheets against Belgium and France. In the game against France in Paris, Peretz made eight saves to keep out France’s usually strong attack.

Neuer did not have a strong first part of the season. He has long looked a long way off his best as Bayern’s number one and has struggled in his usual sweeper role when called upon under Kompany.

This has raised questions about if it is time for Neuer to finally step aside and allow Alexander Nübel, currently on loan at VfB Stuttgart, his chance as the number one at the Allianz Arena. Since joining from Schalke on a free transfer, Nübel has long been touted as Neuer’s successor but has never been given the opportunity at Bayern.
