Manchester United working on deal for Manuel Ugarte ahead of deadline

Manchester United are not giving up on their pursuit of a number six this summer.

For the past few months, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte has been heavily linked with a move to Man United, with the player reportedly agreeing personal terms with the club.

Still, PSG’s asking price for the Uruguayan has proven problematic, with United seemingly at one stage abandoning their pursuit of Ugarte after failing to reach an agreement with the Ligue 1 club.

It appears now, however, that United are not giving up on Ugarte, with the club considering a new number six to be a vital part of the summer transfer overhaul.

The Athletic confirmed this morning that United are still pursuing the PSG man.

“Bringing in a No 6 remains the final piece of the jigsaw laid out at the start of the summer … the Uruguayan is still under consideration,” the report stated.

“Sources connected to the discussions believe an agreement is possible as deadline approaches, with agent Jorge Mendes working on the deal, but it may come late. United had been considering [Burnley’s Sander] Berge but did not progress initial talks, but they do have alternative targets also.”

Berge is no longer an option for United after he agreed to a move to Fulham.

Youssouf Fofana is also now ruled out as has joined AC Milan, so it is unclear who those alternative targets might be.

Last season’s loanee Sofyan Amrabat remains an option and is keen and inexpensive.

Ugarte does still remain the most likely option, however. Since struggling to reach an agreement with PSG over price, United have appeared to explore other approaches to lure the holding midfielder to Old Trafford. These include a loan plus an obligation to buy as per Fabrizio Romano.

The player himself also appears to be enthusiastic about closing a deal, reportedly pushing PSG to lower their demands.
