Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham LIVE! Premier League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today

Manchester United vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Bruno Fernandes brilliantly wrapped up a mightily impressive Manchester United victory against Tottenham as Erik ten Hag’s men produced their finest performance of the season. Three days on from the frustrating scoreless home draw with Newcastle, the Red Devils produced an exceptional display to see off Champions League qualification rivals at a rocking Old Trafford.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs were on the backfoot from the outset and United ran out 2-0 victors as impressive Fred’s deflected strike was followed up by an excellent curling effort from captain Fernandes. This was the best performance of summer appointment Ten Hag’s reign and began with Antony hitting the outside of the post, before Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris produced a string of key saves.

United had 19 shots in a one-sided opening period and deservedly went ahead 76 seconds after half-time as Ben Davies inadvertently deflected home Fred’s low drive. The hosts continued to play with confidence and put the game to bed in the 69th minute, when Fernandes coolly guided a curling effort past Lloris on a night when abject Spurs were fortunate not to lose by more.

Match analysis

23:47 , Matt Verri

Nearly a year into Antonio Conte’s rebuild, Tottenham remain alarmingly brittle in big away games after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

If Conte could insist his side deserved better in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal earlier this month, then he could have no complaints about the result at Old Trafford, as Spurs were thoroughly outplayed and had Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.

The goalkeeper was powerless to prevent Fred’s deflected goal seconds after the restart or Bruno Fernandes’ excellent clincher, but he made a string of fine saves in the first 25 minutes to ensure United did not run away with it, in what was surely their best performance under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag on Ronaldo’s swift exit

22:49 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag confirmed he will address Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to walk down the tunnel before the end of the match as Manchester United beat Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute and was seen walking down the tunnel to head inside a few minutes before the final whistle.

Ten Hag was of course not particularly keen for that to be the focus after the match following his side’s impressive performance, as he insisted talks with Ronaldo could wait.

“I’ve seen him, I didn’t speak to him after,” Ten Hag told Amazon Prime Video.

“I will deal with that tomorrow, not today. Today we celebrate this victory and now we have to recover from this.”

About the only positive for Tottenham

22:25 , Matt Verri

Hugo Lloris 8

Stranded by the deflection on Fred’s strike and powerless to stop Fernandes’ clincher. Made four sharp saves inside the first 25 minutes, with a low dive to deny Marcus Rashford and fingertip stop from Luke Shaw’s volley the picks.

Also saved brilliantly from Rashford in the second half. Kept the scoreline respectable.

That sealed it...

How Fred opened scoring

22:13 , Matt Verri

FT: Man United 2-0 Tottenham

22:08 , Matt Verri

United with their most convincing display of the Ten Hag era.

Rampant all night, Fred and Fernandes with the goals and it could easily have been a heavier defeat for Spurs.

Plenty of questions for Conte’s side after that.

22:05 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Four minutes added on at Old Trafford.

Shaw and Elanga keeping it between themselves on the left wing, Spurs with everyone behind the ball just looking to avoid further punishment now.

22:02 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Final two changes from Conte, as Skipp and Spence replace Bentancur and Perisic.

United in no rush to take any throw-ins now, happy to take their time and enjoy every one of these final seconds.

21:59 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Lucas takes a thump from Varane - sure the Brazilian is absolutely thrilled to be on the pitch right now. Painful one to the side of the head but he’s fine to continue.

Bentancur whips a cross into the box, Dalot flicks it away to safety.

21:56 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Sessegnon, Sanchez and Lucas all brought on as Conte finally turns to his bench. Doherty, Dier and Bissouma the three to make way.

Going to have to be quite the impact from those three to turn this around.

21:54 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Rashford with a great pass in behind for Fernandes, he’s clean through on goal.

He goes round Lloris, finishes into an empty net but the offside flag is up as he wheels away in celebration.

21:50 , Matt Verri

77 mins: McTominay on for Antony, Ten Hag wants a bit more of a solid base in midfield as United look to see this out.

Dalot heads over the bar, Spurs struggling to even get a touch of the balll and United look like a side that want more goals.

21:47 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Rashford past Dier far too easily, onto his right foot int the box.

Powerful strike again, Lloris gets down superbly to turn it behind for a corner. He’s stopped this from being a mauling.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

21:45 , Matt Verri

That is probably that. Spurs deserve nothing from this game and they are on course for a pasting after Fernandes’ doubles the hosts’ lead. A year into Antonio Conte’s rebuild, and Spurs still look so brittle in these big away games.

21:44 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Bissouma plays it through to Kane, dinks a cross into the box but nobody is there.

Conte has to do something now surely - Spurs going absolutely nowhere in this match.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham | Bruno Fernandes 69'

21:42 , Matt Verri

UNITED DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

Kane goes close at one end, the offside flag is up though and the referee plays the advantage as United break.

Ball drops for Fernandes in the box and it’s a brilliant curling finish.

21:40 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Long ball over the top of the Spurs defence, for some reason Lloris doesn’t come off his line.

Rashford gets there, runs out of room though and takes it out of play under pressure from Romero. Still no sign of any subs from Spurs.

Varane trips Kane to ensure there will be no counter for the visitors.

21:38 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Dalot with the step-overs as he moves into the box, shot is deflected over for yet another United corner.

Taken short and played all the way back to Shaw on the halfway line. Oh, and back to De Gea. Would be surprised if that was the plan.

21:36 , Matt Verri

63 mins: This is so, so poor from Tottenham.

Romero lumps a hopeful ball forward, Kane can’t get anywhere near it and it bounces through for De Gea.

21:32 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Fernandes pings a free-kick out wide to Dalot, and it eventually comes all the way back to the midfielder.

Fred has enough of that and puts a brilliant cross into the box, Rashford completely free but he makes a mess of the header. Should really have scored - jump was mistimed and it left the ball slightly behind him.

21:30 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Fernandes slides a ball through, Rashford down in the box for not the first time tonight.

Dier looks a bit sheepish as he immediately puts his hands up to protest his innocence - no real contact there.

21:28 , Matt Verri

55 mins: United becoming increasingly unwilling to pass in forward areas.

Antony runs at the Spurs defence, has Rashford to his left but goes for goal himself from outside the area. Drags it wide.

21:26 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Hojbjerg with a huge scream as Casemiro goes flying in. Does the job too, whistle goes and the United man is shown a yellow card.

Spurs starting to show a bit more in attack now, cross whipped in from deep and Perisic flicks a header well wide. Couldn’t quite get up enough.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

21:25 , Matt Verri

The deflection was cruel but United's goal has been coming. Spurs have to wake up and show more attacking intent now to pasting.

21:24 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Spurs suddenly wake up, Kane finding space just outside the box and his shot flies wide. Took a slight deflection, so Tottenham get a corner.

Perisic’s delivery is headed away, back out to Son and his ball back in is awful.

21:22 , Matt Verri

49 mins: This is threatening to get ugly for Tottenham.

Rashford in behind, drifts past the challenges as he cuts inside into the box on his left foot. Hammers an effort at goal, Lloris just about keeps it out.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham | Fred 47'

21:20 , Matt Verri

UNITED GET THEIR GOAL!

Didn’t take long. It’s more of the same from United and they get an immediate reward.

Sancho back to Fred, he side-foots a shot at goal which takes a deflection and finds the bottom corner. Lloris barely moved.

Back underway!

21:19 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half at Old Trafford.

21:18 , Matt Verri

More shots from United in that half (19) than they have managed in the entirety of any previous match under Erik ten Hag.

Only five of those called Hugo Lloris into action, but the stats tell the story. United rampant on the whole.

As close as United came...

21:12 , Matt Verri

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford.

21:06 , Matt Verri

Goalless but Spurs have taken a pasting, and have Hugo Lloris and luck to thank for still being level.

So far, it's the ultimate example of this season's theme of 'didn't play well, got a result' but they surely have to improve in the second half.

HT: Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

21:04 , Matt Verri

And that is half-time... somehow it’s still goalless.

United with their best display of the season by a mile, almost constant pressure on the Tottenham defence.

Best chance fell to Rashford, he was denied by Lloris though.

21:02 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Two minutes added on, but there will be a bit more than that as Dalot is down getting treatment.

Erik ten Hag will be so pleased with everything about this half apart from the scoreline. United just not clinical enough.

21:01 , Matt Verri

44 mins: More like it from Tottenham, Casemiro loses it and suddenly the visitors burst into life.

Worked out to Doherty on the right, through to Kane and his strike from a tight angle is saved comfortably enough by De Gea.

20:59 , Matt Verri

43 mins: A rare Spurs attack, though they’re not coming forward with any real pace. Content to just keep the ball and try and take the sting out of this match.

Davies loses it though, United unable to break as the pass to Fernandes is overhit.

20:57 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Dier back up on his feet after getting some treatment on that blow, brave defending from the Englishman.

Five minutes plus a bit more for stoppage-time to go in this half, Tottenham will be absolutely desperate to get to the break.

20:54 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Roar of approval from the Old Trafford crowd as their side swarm Tottenham and win it back. Hosts have been absolutely brilliant.

Fred with yet another shot, he’s done everything but score. Now it’s Dalot’s turn, his effort smashes into Dier and he stays down. Took that flush in the face.

20:53 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Rashford tumbles to the floor in the area, under a challenge from Hojbjerg. Never getting a penalty for that.

United stay on the attack, Fred’s effort is blocked. Son can’t hold it up, back come United and there’s hesitation in the Spurs box before they hack it away. Visitors so rattled in defence.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

20:51 , Matt Verri

Spurs have calmed things down in the last five minutes but United are still in the control of this match, with the visitors looking toothless going forward and jittery in the face of United's press.

20:49 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Match a bit more even now, Tottenham getting themselves on the ball in the United half.

Son shifts it onto his right foot and tries his luck from a fair way out, it’s never troubling De Gea though.

20:47 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Tottenham’s best spell of possession probably in the entire match so far, not that it’s saying much.

Poor pass is cut out by Casemiro, United can break but Fernandes then returns the favour and gives it away. Ball played forward to Kane, he flicks it on but there’s nobody behind him.

20:45 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Another lovely United move. Sancho, Shaw, Fernandes, back to Casemiro.

The Brazilian hammers a first-time strike at goal, Lloris doesn’t move but fortunately for him it flies wide of the post. Not far away at all.

20:43 , Matt Verri

27 mins: This is not sustainable for Tottenham, surely. They’ve had 9% possession in the last five minutes.

Fernandes with room to get a shot away from just outside the box, always rising and it’s over the bar. Had time to do a lot better than that.

20:40 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Rashford’s shot is deflected over the bar, Tottenham cannot get out here. Another corner.

Already into double-figures for shots here, United. Got to be their best attacking display of the season so far.

Cross stood up to the back post by Dalot, Shaw catches the volley sweetly. Lloris called into action again.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

20:39 , Matt Verri

Spurs are living dangerously here and have Hugo Lloris to thank for still being level. United are growing into this game and feel increasingly menacing, while Spurs have been restricted to the odd spark when Harry Kane gets on the ball.

20:38 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Ridiculous challenge from Romero, flies up from defence and cleans Fred out. Free-kick United, 25 yards out.

Up and over the wall, relatively central though and Lloris tips it over comfortably.

20:37 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Massive save from Lloris, United should be in front!

So simple too. Fred slides a great pass in behind, Rashford gets in between Dier and Romero and he’s clean through on goal. Goes for maximum power, low strike is turned behind by Lloris.

20:34 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Absolutely sensational from Kane.

Pings a glorious pass out to Doherty who is in space ont he right. Cuts inside into the box, tries to curl a left-footed strike into the far corner but it’s badly lacking in the curl part. Well wide.

20:33 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Fernandes finding a lot of space in the middle of the pitch, which will worry Conte considering he has three midfielders on the pitch.

United slow it up before Sancho drives into the box, low cross in at the near post and it’s cleared away. Shaw tries a deeper ball in, Perisic chests it back to Lloris.

20:31 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Tottenham growing into this after a slightly shaky period.

Again it’s Bentancur making the run into the box, he gets his header away and it’s on target until Martinez gets his body in the way.

20:28 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Perisic gets his first chance to run at Dalot, as he gets the ball in space on the left.

Looks to beat Dalot on the outside, full-back gets his body across though and forces the Spurs man into a heavy touch, taking it out of play. Great defending.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

20:27 , Matt Verri

One consequence of Bissouma's involvement is Bentancur getting in more advanced positions than usual.

The Uruguayan has already flashed an effort across the face of goal and looks set to be the central support for the front two. United with the best chances so far, though.

20:26 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Antony inches away from giving United the lead, hosts well on top.

He does what he does best, cutting inside onto that left foot and getting a curling shot away. Beats Lloris, flicks off the outside of the post and behind.

20:23 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Lovely dummy from Fernandes and United are away.

Fred looks to play Rashford in, Doherty slides in and the ball falls for Antony with Lloris off his line. Lobbed effort, goalkeeper should just catch it but slips at the same time and parries it behind. Not his best work.

Corner comes out to Fred, great strike from distance and it’s tipped over.

20:20 , Matt Verri

5 mins: First chance of the match, and it’s really good work from Bentancur.

He makes the run in behind the United defence, goes for goal from a tight angle and is not a million miles away from finding that far corner. Decent effort.

20:19 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Bit nervy from both sides, poor pass from United but Dier then takes a wild hack at it to give it back to the hosts.

They work it out to Antony, he immediately looks to cut inside onto that left foot. Perisic can’t let that happen.

20:17 , Matt Verri

2 mins: United with all of the ball in the very early stages, that won’t bother Tottenham at all though.

Lots of onus on Son and Kane to deliver when Spurs do get possession - not going to get too much support in an attacking sense from that midfield.

KICK-OFF!

20:15 , Matt Verri

Underway at Old Trafford!

20:12 , Matt Verri

Teams are out at Old Trafford, great atmosphere as you’d expect.

Let’s hope whatever happens it’s exciting. Goals are all we want.

Not long now!

20:06 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in less than ten minutes now.

Chance is there for both sides to register a statement win - will either be brave enough to really go for it tonight?

Could turn into a bit of a stalement though, with both sides more comfortable on the counter.

Dan Kilpatrick at Old Trafford

20:01 , Matt Verri

Certainly a night to warm-up...

Kane set for historic season

19:50 , Matt Verri

Harry Kane’s goal against Everton on Saturday kept the Tottenham forward on course for an historic double.

Kane needs just nine more goals to surpass Jimmy Greaves’s all-time record of 266 for Spurs and, with the World Cup looming, he is just two shy of Wayne Rooney’s record England haul. All being well, Kane will surely celebrate becoming the top scorer for club and country in the same season, possibly even in the same month.

Against Manchester United tonight, Kane is vying for a far less meaningful milestone, but one which nonetheless reflects his consistency: if he scores, he will become the first Spurs player to find the net in six consecutive Premier League games, despite the sense that he is still working his way through the gears this season.

How it stands

19:35 , Matt Verri

Tottenham sit third in the table, level on points with Manchester City and four points behind Arsenal. With those sides not playing until the week, Conte’s side have the chance to go above City and close right up to the Gunners tonight.

As for United, victory would take them to within four points of Spurs with a game in hand. Not much consistency from Ten Hag’s side this season, they sit in sixth.

Ronaldo dropped

19:25 , Matt Verri

Rashford returns for United to lead the line, with Ronaldo dropping to the bench in the only change from Ten Hag. Eriksen is on the bench, as Fred and Casemiro continue in midfield.

Conte has opted for a 3-5-2 formation, as Bissouma comes in alongside Bentancur and Hojbjerg. Son and Kane the two up front, with Doherty and Perisic getting the nod as wing-backs.

Premier League stars one tackle away from disaster

18:54 , Matt Verri

It was striking to witness Richarlison break down in tears after Tottenham’s win over Everton last Saturday.

The Brazilian was forced off with a calf problem during the match and the injury was so painful he had to leave the stadium on crutches.

Fearing his World Cup dream was over, Richarlison could not contain his emotions as he spoke to media afterwards, but a scan on Monday revealed the injury was not as bad as feared and Brazil’s No9 is expected to be back in action in a fortnight, leaving him with enough time to be ready for Qatar.

Others players have not been so fortunate. Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota become the latest player to be ruled out of Qatar after being carried off in the win over Manchester City, while England could be without right-backs Reece James and Kyle Walker after injuries this month.

Ronaldo to do it again?

18:46 , Matt Verri

Cristiano Ronaldo pretty much beat Tottenham on his own when the sides met at Old Trafford earlier this year.

He scored a hat-trick as United got the better of Spurs in a 3-2 thriller - will he even start tonight?

Ten Hag a big fan of Conte

18:39 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag was full of praise in his pre-match press conference when asked about the work Antonio Conte has done at Tottenham.

“He’s a fabulous manager,” Ten Hag said of the Italian.

“He’s winning titles, trophies in the Premier League, in Italy, and you can really see his signature in the match from his team and that’s a big compliment I think.”

Conte not taking United lightly

18:31 , Matt Verri

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte says Manchester United will “always be a monster” whose “power” has not dwindled despite the club’s recent struggles.

Things are yet to click for new manager Erik ten Hag in the United dugout, his men currently sat in fifth, seven points behind Spurs as they seek a return to the Champions League following last season’s sixth-placed finish.

Next May will mark a decade since United’s last Premier League title and they have gone five seasons in a row without silverware of any kind but Conte believes their recruitment in recent years is proof that the club’s stature and potential has not been harmed by the drought.

“This period is not a lucky period for United if you compare to 10 years ago, but only two years ago, don’t forget, United fought for the Premier League and finished second behind City,” Conte said.

United in nice and early!

18:24 , Matt Verri

Prediction

18:18 , Matt Verri

A tight, nervy game could develop between two good sides hardly playing their most free-flowing football at the moment.

Both are perhaps more dangerous on the counter than in possession, so it’s unlikely to be the most open of matches.

A 1-1 draw.

Tottenham team news

18:11 , Matt Verri

Antonio Conte may have to turn towards one of his reserves to fill out the Tottenham attack given Richarlison’s absence and fears Dejan Kulusevski is yet to recover from a hamstring injury.

“Lucas Moura can be a possibility,” Conte said. “[Bryan] Gil can be a possibility, [Ivan] Perisic like a striker is a possibility. I have another day of training sessions to make the best decision.

“You know we like to play with a 3-4-3, with three strikers, and if we can’t change then I prefer to continue to play with a 3-4-3. Otherwise I will find another solution but I think we have the possibility to play with a 3-4-3.”

Predicted Tottenham XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet; Doherty, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon; Son, Kane, Perisic.

Man United team news

18:02 , Matt Verri

Marcus Rashford should be fit to start for United as Ten Hag faces dropping either Cristiano Ronaldo or Jadon Sancho to make way for the improving striker.

Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek sit this one out while Christian Eriksen is a doubt. Scott McTominay returns from suspension, but Anthony Martial has been ruled out with injury.

Predicted Manchester United XI: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, McTominay; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Rashford.
