Manchester United vs Liverpool – Match Preview

Manchester United vs Liverpool – Match Preview

English football’s most successful clubs battle it out once again this Sunday at Old Trafford, with two Dutchmen in the dugout hoping to get one over each other.

Liverpool have been perfect so far in the Premier League with two wins and no goals
conceded and Arne Slot’s men will be looking to maintain that impeccable record in
Manchester.

The Red Devils need to respond after last weekend’s late defeat to Brighton and there’s no better way to do so than by beating their fiercest rivals.

Liverpool’s late-window signing Federico Chiesa is unlikely to feature, while Manchester United’s deadline day recruit, Manuel Ugarte, was not registered in time.

Form

Manchester United: WL

Manchester United’s opening day victory over Fulham was marred by the following weekend’s result, as Joao Pedro’s injury-time header condemned the Red Devils to defeat at Brighton.

United have been second-best in this weekend’s fixture in recent years, though last season’s encounters hold fond memories. Erik ten Hag’s team edged a thrilling FA Cup quarter-final 4-3 at Old Trafford, with Amad Diallo scoring a 120th-minute winner. The Red Devils went on to win the trophy.

Liverpool: WW

Ipswich Town and Brentford both fell to 2-0 losses against Arne Slot’s team, with this new-look Liverpool outfit looking resolute and accomplished.

Slot’s style of play focuses on control and possession, a style that has certainly favoured the Reds so far with neither Ipswich nor Brentford able to break down the defence.

Mohamed Salah has resumed business as usual with goals in both games and he is a part of a front three that are all on song.

Diogo Jota is spearheading the attack and he scored Liverpool’s first of the new campaign against Ipswich Town before setting up fellow frontman Luis Diaz to score the opener at Anfield last Sunday.

Last Meeting: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool, Premier League, 7th April 2024.

It was honours even in the last matchup at Old Trafford, with both sides having to settle for a point in Manchester after an exhilarating game.

The first blow was delivered by Liverpool as Luis Diaz was unmarked at the back post from a corner and the Colombian volleyed home from a Darwin Nunez flick-on to put the visitors in front.

But United levelled proceedings with a moment of magic from captain Bruno Fernandes. Jarell Quansah’s poor square pass presented the Portugal international with the ball and, with Caoimhim Kelleher off his line, Fernandes thought quickly to lift the ball over the Irishman and into the back of the net from well over 40 yards.

Kobbie Mainoo then scored a beauty of his own, as the teenager turned smartly and curled the ball into the top corner to turn the game around.

Liverpool threatened throughout and they eventually got the reward their pressure deserved when Harvey Elliott was chopped down by Aaron Wan-Bissaka inside the area and a penalty was given. Salah confidently dispatched the spot kick to ensure they didn’t return to Merseyside empty-handed.
