Holders Manchester United kick off the defence of the League Cup against Burton Albion on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho is a fan of the competition, keen to win the first silverware on offer in the season with four triumphs over the years, and will likely have the same mentality this season.

The last time these two played each other was 11 years go, Burton - then a non-league team - first holding United to a very credible draw in the FA Cup third round.

The Premier League giants won the reply 5-0 in a game which Gerard Pique started and Giuseppe Rossi scored twice. Promising youngster Andre Gomes and Scott McTominay may feature on Wednesday.

Manchester United host Burton Albion at Old Trafford with kick-off scheduled for 8pm on Wednesday, September 20.

Team news

Jose Mourinho will shuffle his pack for the visit of the Championship outfit, with Michael Carrick and Victor Lindelof likely to come in.

The centre-back is yet to feature in the Premier League but played the full 90 minutes, and impressed, as Basel were beaten in the Champions League.

Paul Pogba is out for the foreseeable, while Luke Shaw is nearing a return but midweek should come too soon.

Youngsters Scott McTominay and Andre Gomes could well feature.

Head to head

Manchester United and Burton have played each other just twice before.

Burton, then in the Conference, held the Premier League giants to a 0-0 draw in a FA Cup third round tie in January, 2006. However, 10 days later United won the replay 5-0 at Old Trafford.
