Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has suggested Ruben Amorim may have his own Viktor Gyokeres at the club.

The Sweden international is one of the most in-demand strikers heading into next summer’s transfer window following a stunning start to the season for club and country.

In 23 appearances across all competitions for Sporting CP, he has netted 25 times - including a Champions League hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Manchester City last month.

Such form has seen Gyokeres linked with a move to Old Trafford and reunite with Ruben Amorim who is reportedly eyeing a striker signing.

Whether a deal materialises remains to be seen but following United’s comeback win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday evening, Hargreaves noted that the Portuguese tactician has a player in Rasmus Hojlund who is a similar profile to Gyokeres.

"That's for sure, I think he probably knew that before," Hargreaves said on TNT Sport when asked if the Denmark international is Amorim’s best centre-forward option.

"Also Gyokeres is a really similar profile to Hojlund in terms of physicality and size. He's a great athlete, Rasmus Hojlund as well.

"Obviously there's things both of them can work on, him and [Joshua] Zirkzee but right now it's Hojlund, it's Amad and it's Bruno, they're the ones creating opportunities for Manchester United."

Amorim also heaped praise on Hojlund after his brace secured an important victory for the Red Devils.

“He’s improving, I think he’s more near the goal now,” the United boss told reporters. “He knows better the movements he has to do. He could score more this evening but he’s scoring, he’s working, he’s controlling the ball better so he’s improving.

“The other guys are there also on the bench to change the game and they did it.”
